My face heated a little more. “Then yeah, just like that.”

His eyes darkened, and he rumbled unhappily. “I don’t want to be chosen because I’m your only choice, Cier.”

“Youaremy only choice. And I’m your only choice too. Unless you’re secretly in love with some strong, fancy water fae chick.”

He finally erased the distance between us, grabbing my face between his hands and squeezing my cheeks. “No,” he growled, his voice harsh and gravelly.

It made my blood hot, like it always did.

“Okay,” I said quietly, out loud this time. “We’re each other’s only option, but that doesn’t mean we couldn’t be good together. Or that we’d choose something else if we had a choice. It’s just a simple fact.”

He jerked his head in a nod, and then finally released my face.

Neither of us stepped away from each other, though.

Zoran finally signed, “A few of our fae are coming with us into the Aboa. They’ll ensure your safety if I can’t. Please don’t touch them.”

“Obviously I’m not going to touch them,” I grumbled.

“Thank you.” He leaned his head closer and brushed the side of his nose against mine. My eyes closed, and I ignored the ache to feel his hands on my skin again.

I’d have given just about anything to be wrapped in his arms, tucked against his chest, but I couldn’t say that aloud.

“Thanks for not killing that guard,” I added.

He caught my hand and squeezed twice, telling me silently,

Yes, you’re welcome.

“Iamwearing that blue dress,” I whispered to him. “It’s my least favorite. If the Aboa ruins it, no harm done.”

He squeezed my hand.

No.

“Yes.”

Another squeeze.

No.

“Dammit, Zoran. You’re my mate, not my boss.”

He pulled his face away, and then took a step backward so I could see his hands as he signed, “If you wear that dress, I will tie you to my side again, Cier.”

I scowled and signed back, “Go ahead.”

His eyes narrowed again.

Mine did too.

He could go right ahead and tie us together; I had enough earth magic to break through any damn rope.

I yanked the dress off his shoulder, tightened the towel around my torso, and then stormed back into the bathroom. I nearly ripped the damn fabric as I pulled it on, and struggled to get it tied tightly enough to keep my nipples covered, but finally got it and stepped back out into the bedroom.

Zoran was waiting, sitting on the edge of my bed, leaned back like he had all the time in the world.

His eyes heated as they moved over my skin, and he signed one word without looking back at my face. “No.”
