None of us had slept long enough, but it was going to have to do.

I tapped into my magic, searching the land for a monster, and sat up straighter when I felt footsteps.

“Shit,” I whispered, squeezing my eyes shut and focusing on the creature. If I paid enough attention, I could usually make out the basic shape of the thing. But this time, it wasn’t working.

I opened my panicked eyes and met Zoran’s calm ones.

He signed, “Where?”

“Down the cave, that way. Not far.” I gestured toward it.

He caught my hand, kissed the backs of my fingers, and strode off in that direction. As he went, he signed something quickly to the fae he’d left behind with me.

“What did he say?” I asked them quietly.

“To protect you, of course.” One of the women winked at me, and my face warmed.

Of course.

I supposed that our conversation about choosing which battles to fight with Zoran had softened them up to me. Then again, sleeping beside each other in the Aboa could do that too.

A roar sounded down the hallway, and I shuddered at the horrific noise.

It cut off halfway, though. And a few minutes later, Zoran came walking back, looking exactly the same as he had before he left.

Not a damn scratch on him.

“You’re way too powerful,” I whispered to him, as he signed for the others to get ready to move. His lips curved in a grin, and he winked at me as he accepted the food one of the men was distributing, taking enough for me too.

We ate quickly before he scooped me up off the ground and started to move again. The fae stuck close together, and I focused my senses on the caves around us as I watched for more monsters.

They seemed to have picked up on our scent or something while we were sleeping, because there were alotmore of them nearby.

“We’re getting close to a few of the creatures,” I whispered to Zoran and the other fae around us. “I think they’ve figured out where we were.”

“The waters are full as well,” one of the male fae admitted.

“We’re going to have to fight our way through them,” I said. Though I’d seen Zoran fight while both sane and insane, and knew he was tough, the idea of having our lives at risk still worried me.

There was nowhere safe for him to tuck me away this time, though. Nowhere peaceful, or out of the way of the drama.

Zoran squeezed my thigh twice, and then once.

Yes, we would fight our way out.

No, I didn’t need to worry.

“They’re no match for our king,” one of the female fae said.

I fought the urge to glare at her. Guess my possessive fae instincts were finally showing their ugly heads.

He wasmine.

Zoran slid me over his shoulder without missing a step, and I wrapped my legs around his middle, clinging tightly to him.

A creature slid out of the water in front of us, and Zoran’s magic cut it in two before it was completely free.

Another monster jogged out of a cave, its body blazing fire.
