Was it planning on killing me slowly or something?

I tilted my head back, trying to look at the wide part of the monster’s body that I was pressed up against.

Horror clutched me when I saw what looked like a mouth next to my head. It was dark, without any teeth inside, and open much wider than my own could.

Holy shit.

Holy shit.

Holy shit.

I screamed silently, fighting against the creature’s hold.

Its grip on me tightened further, but I realized its mouth hadn’t opened any wider.

Maybe it took it a while to stretch its jaws? Or whatever the hell else it was made out of?

The scientist in me was fascinated, but I smashed her down.

I didn’t know how long it would take the creature to eat me—which meant I didn’t have time to wait for Zoran to find me.

Or to try to signal him.

I had to figure out a way out of this mess myself.

With more magic, that would’ve been easier. If I could just throw a thick, stabby rock shard at the monster, it’d be dead in a heartbeat, probably.

Or I’d at least be free.

But I wasn’t Quake.

My magic was subpar, but strong enough to get me out of this shitty situation, I hoped.

Focusing on the stone beneath my ass, I closed my eyes and lowered my hands to the ground.

I needed something sharp—a stone knife of some kind. I couldn’t grow it fast enough to slice the monster automatically, so I’d have to do the slicing myself.

Even if the idea of doing so made me wish I had never left my perfectly comfortable, somewhat safe beach house. Stabby guards were much preferable to viney tentacle creatures.

Slowly, with my quiet pleading, the stone grew into the shape of a wickedly-sharp kitchen knife.

The tentacles gripped me tightly enough to cut off my breathing, restraining me completely. I held my eyes shut as I started getting slightly dizzy, not letting myself look back at the thing’s mouth.

I had to kill it.

I just didn’t know how.

Where was I supposed to find its heart? The thing didn’t even have a body; just vine-tentacles and a mouth.

The mouth had to be the best shot, right? Behind it, maybe? Or underneath it?

I’d need more knives, but I didn’t have time. The thing would literally strangle me to death if I didn’t kill it first.

There wasn’t time for panicking, though. Or even really for planning.

I was going to do this.

I had to do this.
