My knees shook even worse after I crashed on them in front of the water. I was still paying half-attention to the land around me, checking for monsters, but I hadn’t been aware enough to sense the vine creature that had captured me. And that made it difficult for me to believe I’d be able to sense the next creature, either.

Reaching my hand toward the water, I fought to ignore the trembling. My fingers touched the liquid, and the warmth of it surrounded them. It slipped over my skin gently, forming slow, relaxed shapes.

My breathing calmed a little bit.

Zoran could feel me.

He was there.

I wasn’t alone.

Closing my eyes, I let out another long breath.

The water began to move more frantically over my fingers, and I withdrew them, looking down at the pool.

The liquid wrapped around my arm before migrating to my wrist and forming a strange bracelet. It tugged my arm toward one of the tunnels on one side of me.

I frowned, looking down the tunnel.

Though I couldn’t see anything, I could sense something walking lightly on the stone in that direction. It definitely wasn’t the king, which meant it was another creature that probably wanted to eat me. I’d gotten lucky with the last one and its slow-working jaws, but I probably wouldn’t be lucky again.

Which meant I really didnotwant to go that way.

“I can’t go there. There’s a monster,” I whispered to Zoran.

The water jerked my arm in the other direction, pulling me.

“You want me to go?” I asked him.

The water squeezed my wrist twice, rapidly.

Yes, go.

I let out a slow sigh, rising to my feet.

I was so damn tired, and my nerves were entirely shot.

“Please come and find me,” I said quietly.

The water squeezed my wrist again, two more times.

Yes, I’m coming.

“Fast, I hope.”

The water squeezed me twice more before it tugged my arm again, harder.

Yes, go now.

Just as I took a step in that direction, something massive emerged from the pool behind me.

My body froze.

The creature grabbed me and dragged me under the water so quickly that I didn’t even have time to hold my breath.

Chapter8

The water surroundedmy face in a bubble, and I let out a relieved breath when I realized Zoran was helping me breathe.
