I had to move away from the water.

There had been so many monsters inside it, and I couldn’t just wait for them to find me. No way in hell would that work out.

So despite the churning pit in my stomach, the cold I could feel deep down to my bones, and the blood gushing from my shoulder, I turned and ran.

There wasno goal that I was running toward. No aim. No purpose. I was hours and hours away from Zoran, even assuming he’d been heading in the right direction when he searched for me after the first monster caught me.

And that meant my main priority was staying alive and away from the creatures in the caves.

There were so many of them.

It felt like I was constantly turning around, heading in a different direction, making myself dizzy, sick, and terrified.

But when things got as bad as they could, I whispered to Zoran that I was terrified, and his water squeezed my wrist twice.

He was there.

He was looking for me.

I was going to be okay.

And with the silent comfort of his assurances, I kept moving.

I wasn’tsure how much longer I could keep my eyes open and my legs working when I heard the first roar in hours or days. I didn’t know how long I’d been on the move, so it was hard to judge.

My head snapped in the direction of the roar, and fear coursed through me so hard and fast that I struggled to breathe.

“Tell me that was you,” I whispered into the cave.

The water around my wrist squeezed twice.

It was him.

He was coming for me.

More roars echoed through the caves and tunnels around me.

Overwhelmed, I covered my ears and retreated into a corner, focusing on my magic. It was so strained and drained that I could barely feel anything at all.

But when I focused, I felt my mate’s feet on the stone, as well as two other pairs.

It was him.

He was coming for me.

My eyes burned.

Tears dripped down my face.

The roaring grew louder, but I remained where I was.

And slowly, the noises died with the creatures.

My heart pounded so hard I thought it might break through my chest.

My knees knocked every few seconds, my back braced against the wall behind me.

Another minute passed, and then a thick leg stepped around a corner.
