She laughed again, and I looked at the first dress.

I bit my lip, hiding a grin when I saw the cut of the fabric. It was still styled like a water fae’s, but the strips of fabric were much, much thicker. My tits definitely wouldn’t be hanging out.

I looked through all of the dresses one by one, forcing myself to continue chatting with the woman as I checked out all of the new outfits.

And yeah, none of them would show a whole lot of belly, breast, or ass. There was quite a bit of my back showing on pretty much all of them, but that wasn’t really scandalous.

I couldn’t decide whether to be furious or amused by the lengths Zoran had gone to, to replace my clothes.

I was still trying to decide how I felt about it while the woman enthusiastically folded and packaged the dresses. She filled a few of the pretty, reusable bags the water fae always used—which I didn’t have a single one of.

Guess that was changing, too.

When I walked away from the dressmaker, a few of my bags were hanging over my shoulders and the others were dangling from my inner elbows. I needed to head home to put them down, but Zoran was probably still there, so that was a no-go.

A male fae strode up to my side, so I glanced his way.

When I saw the guard who had pulled the knife on me, I did a double-take.

And then took a quick step to the side.

“I don’t mean any harm,” the man said quickly, showing me his hands as if to prove that he wasn’t holding a knife at the moment.

“Then why did you go to the effort of tracking me down?” I shot back.

“It wasn’t a lot of effort. Everyone is talking about the queen wandering the marketplace.”

How had I gone from enemy number one to being the queen so fast?

“Anyway, I owe you a thank-you. And an apology,” the man continued.

I lifted an eyebrow at him, waiting.

“Thank you for intervening with King Flood. If you hadn’t, I’d be a headless corpse, buried in the sand instead of the sea. I should’ve known better than to lift a weapon against you. You may be an earth fae, but you’re still the queen. So I apologize for that.”

“Alright.” I turned my focus back to the marketplace, which we were now wandering aimlessly. I’d have to backtrack to return to the organized trail I’d planned in my head, but I’d survive. Probably. “I appreciate the apology. Am I going to get stabbed if I try to visit the public baths again?”

He chuckled. “No. Definitely not. But I wouldn’t recommend visiting for a while. Flood seems more possessive of your body than most water fae.”

Yeah… I’d definitely noticed that. My bags of clothing had too.

“Probably a by-product of spending so much time with the other kings,” the guard added.

“Probably. He seems worse about it than Flame, though. Definitely more than Quake, too. Harper says Storm doesn’t like it when her dresses are too revealing, but Flood…” I bit my lip.

He chuckled. “The bond hits differently for some males.”

“Apparently. Are you that possessive with your mate?”

“I have yet to choose a female, but I can imagine that having an unfulfilled bond would push any male to the point of possessiveness. It may fade when you seal things.”

I grimaced. “I don’t even want to know how anyone knows we haven’t done that yet.”

He laughed. “No male who’s had his female in his bed would be able to live apart from her. Our mates keep us sane.”

“Huh.” I tucked some hair behind my ear. “Well, thanks again for the apology. I’m going to wander a bit longer.”

“Of course.” The man dipped his head toward me. “Queen Ayla.”
