Blinking more tears out of my eyes, I threw my arms around him and hugged him tightly. “I love you too. I loved you even before we could talk—I just didn’t know how to say it or if you’d think I was insane. I’m so glad I’m here, in Bluhm. And that I found you.”

“So am I,” he said, holding me just as tightly as I held him. When I pulled away, he signed, “I want to take you to our academy today. I thought you could talk to the scholars and teachers, to decide if you wanted to start studying again or if you’d prefer to do something else.”

My eyes stung. “Really?”

“Of course.” His lips curved upward, his expression soft. “I want you to be happy here.”

“Even if I decide I want to spend the rest of my life studying sea serpents? Or trying to build a device that can make music?”

He chuckled. “As long as it makes your eyes light up like that.”

I threw my arms around him and kissed him again.

For the first time in my life, I had found the place I belonged.

Chapter18

After a long, exhilarating day at the academy, Zoran and I dropped into bed together. My mind was spinning with possibilities, but I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. My mate had assured me I had all the time in the world to decide, though.

His hand started to stroke my hip, and my mind slipped over to the scandalous side of things. I was still dressed—maybe that was the real reason I hadn’t fallen asleep.

“I’ve never been to the public baths,” I whispered.

His hand stilled, and he whispered back, “No.”

I rolled toward him, so I could see if he signed to me. His expression was extremely un-thrilled, and his hands made no move to add anything else.

“Come on. There’s probably no one there at night anyway, right? People seem to be the most active during the day here. And you said you love my passion… I’m passionate about seeing the baths. Tonight.”

He huffed, and signed, “Your passion is going to get someone killed tonight if we follow through with it.”

I flashed him a smile. “I could leave my clothes on.”

Would I?

No, probably not.

But technically, I stillcould.

“It would be fun,” I practically sang.

“There’s a tavern right next to it,” he signed. “There’s no way we’ll make it without being seen.”

“Do you want to bet on that?” I countered.

His eyes heated. “No.”

“Stop worrying. I won’t get naked unless you want me naked.”

Though technically healwayswanted me naked, I wasn’t going to say that.

“No,” he signed again, though I could see his resolve softening.

I heaved a sigh, rolling to my back like I’d accepted the answer.

He relaxed, though he didn’t touch me.

He probably thought I was mad, or disappointed.
