“Why not?” She leaned toward me. “You guys aremated, remember? You literally vowed to belong to each other. If he’s not going to embrace that, maybe you should make him.”

“Why would I want a man who doesn’t want me until he loses control of hisinstincts?” I argued.

“Oh, I wouldn’t say he doesn’t want you. Didn’t you see the way he fixed your clothes before he left you? And blocked your view of my naked mate?”

“He was just being polite.”

“When have you ever seen him be polite to anyone in his kingdom?” she shot back.

“I never see him, so, never. As far as I know, he could be in love with some water fae chick.” I brushed some hair out of my eyes. “How do we avoid the instincts, other than just staying away from each other?”

Which I was tired of doing, though I didn’t say it aloud.

“I’m positive he’s not in love with someone else. And you can’t avoid them; they’ll get stronger and stronger, until they take control completely.”

I blinked. “You mean…”

Her lips turned down in a grimace, which was answer enough to the question I didn’t want to voice. A shitty answer, but still, an answer.

“So we’re going to have sex,” I said flatly.

She nodded. “It’ll be much better for both of you if you just acknowledge that neither of you have control over his instincts and then get naked together.”

I squeezed my eyes shut. “I’m a virgin, Ivy.”

Ivy was silent for a moment.

I opened my eyes. “Can you imagine having your first time with a man who you learn sign language for, who then ignores you formonths?”

“I don’t think he’s avoiding you because he doesn’t want you,” Ivy said gently. “I think he’s probably been trying to keep his instincts under control so he doesn’t hurt you, and being away from you made that easier.”

“If that was the case, he should’ve told me.”

“He’s a virgin too. And you’re the one who told him you just wanted to be friends over and over, right?”

“I didn’t know him!” I tossed a hand out. “And we couldn’t even communicate. Now we can, and he doesn’t even want to be friends. I don’t know what to think anymore. Maybe I should move to the earth fae land; at least they wouldn’t all hate me.”

“Come here.” Ivy waved me over.

I grudgingly crossed the room until I was sitting next to her.

She wrapped her arms around me, and pulled me in for a tight hug, with her blanket still separating us. “I’m sorry this situation is shitty, but I think you just need to sit down with Flood and have a genuine conversation about how both of you feel. I know it’s not easy, but it’ll be worth it.”

“Until he rejects me,” I grumbled.

“He’s not going to reject you.”

“You have absolutely no way of knowing that.”

“He had a plan to woo you,” Ivy whispered. “I’m not supposed to know about it. Or tell you about it. But Tariq said he was only rolling with thejust friendsthing while you learned sign language, so you could communicate. As soon as you were fluent, he was going to start trying to win your heart or something.”

My forehead wrinkled. “I’ve been mostly fluent for nearly two months. It’ll be a while until I’m at the same level as the other kings, but communication hasn’t been a problem. Maybe that used to be his plan, but he definitely hasn’t started trying to make me fall in love with him or anything. I hadn’t even seen his room in the castle until today.”

She frowned. “Maybe his instincts started taking over before he could enact the plan.”

I shook my head. “It doesn’t matter. We have bigger problems than our nonexistent relationship right now, anyway. The water fae hate me, and Crest just woke up the Mother of all Monsters. I already know Flood’s going to end up in the Aboa to put her back to sleep, like he did with the Father of all Monsters a few months ago. Actually, that was the beginning of him ignoring me.”

Ivy grimaced. “We can come help, if you need us.”
