“Like, an actual siren?” I ask, and Gretchen nods.

“She probably had to use her powers to get Finn to commit,” she tells me, and my heart sinks.

“Wait, commit? Like, they’re together? Engaged or married?” I ask, my words falling over themselves in my rush to understand.

“She wishes,” Lucy says. “Raven lost it when her powers wore off and Finn snapped out of the trance she put him in. He tried to pry her off of him. Word is it was an epic scene.”

“Why is she still coming around, then?” I ask.

Lucy shrugs. “She’s determined, and I’m guessing embarrassed. Her powers usually work on whoever she wants, but Finn seems to be resistant. Now, at least, I mean. So she keeps pulling stunts like showing up at the office to try and get Finn back under her control.”

“To no avail,” Gretchen says. “If I wasn’t so intimidated by her, I’d tell her to just give up. She’s gorgeous and smart. She could have any guy she wants, so why bother wasting her time on the one who doesn’t want anything to do with her?”

“Speaking of guys,” Lucy says. “Gretchen, what’s going on with that guy you went out with over the weekend? Think there’s going to be a third date?”

As the other women start talking about Gretchen’s dating life, I allow myself to relax. Finn’s not involved with Raven! In fact, it doesn’t sound like he’s involved with anyone.

I know that doesn’t mean he’ll be interested in me. From what I’ve learned tonight, it sounds like Finn deliberately keeps his personal life out of the office – unless it barges in, like Raven did today.

So maybe I’ve been imagining that Finn seems to have more than a professional interest in me. Maybe he was just being nice. Maybe I’m trying to see something that doesn’t exist because I’m still trying so hard to convince myself that I did the right thing by moving here in the first place.

“What about you, Emma?” Lucy asks me as I tune back into their conversation. “Any dating horror stories to share? Or do you have a boyfriend?”

“No, I’m single,” I say. “No dating horror stories, either. I had to work so hard in school, not just in the classes but also part-time jobs and stuff to pay tuition, that I haven’t really had time to date a lot.”

“Hopefully that will change soon,” Janice says. “You’re young and pretty, I predict that your social calendar will be packed in no time.”

I smile my thanks at her compliment, even as I doubt that she’s right. I’ve never felt drawn to anyone, or wanted to be in a serious relationship. At least, not until I met Finn.

Stop thinking like this!I chide myself. I’m being ridiculous, mooning over someone I barely know.

The door to the bar opens, and I glance up to see Finn, Luc, and Damien walk in. Finn looks in my direction, and I blush bright red. His eyes widen, and I quickly look away, mortified. Fuck!

FINN

“Finn!” Damien calls as soon as I step out of the elevator. “Luc and I need to talk to you.”

I scowl, still in a bad mood over the Raven situation. “I’m swamped with work right now, Damien. This is not a good time.”

“Yet you had time for Raven,” Damien says, crossing his arms over his chest.

“She showed up here unannounced and uninvited,” I inform him. “I just finished reaming out my security guys for letting her in. Again.”

Damien smiles, but there’s no warmth in it. “Perhaps you need a new team, then, Finn. One that isn’t so enamored of that siren.”

“I don’t disagree with you, but I also don’t have the time to start looking for a new team.”

“Speaking of time,” Damien says pointedly, and I sigh.

“You’re not going to let me out of this, are you?”

“No.” He claps a strong hand on my shoulder and we walk into his office, where Luc is sitting on the long leather couch, scrolling through his phone.

“Finn, I heard Raven was in the building,” my younger brother grins. “She just can’t get enough of you, huh?”

“I’m glad you think this is so amusing,” I say as Damien and I sit down, too. “Put your phone away, Luc. This is a work meeting.”
