“Guilty as charged,” I grin. “Welcome to your surprise ‘Emma is a badass and we owe our jobs to her’ party.”

“Oh my gosh,” Emma says, tears in her eyes. “You guys, this is amazing!”

“No,youare,” Lucy says, hugging her. “You’re a rockstar, Emma.”

“Yeah, girl,” Gretchen adds. “I never would have guessed that you had it in you. Thank you for saving the firm.”

“Well, Finn helped,” Emma says.

“Finn also helped get us into that mess in the first place,” Luc points out.

“Thanks, bro,” I tell him.

“Hey, just keeping the record straight and your ego in check,” he says.

“Emma, have some cake,” Sophia says, handing her a slice on a plate.

“Thanks, Sophia, this looks delicious.” Emma glances around the room and takes a closer look at the decorations. “Um, why are the streamers decorated with scorpions?”

“Because they’re my favorite animal,” I say.

Emma looks at Sophia, who rolls her eyes. “Yeah, apparently Finn went through a whole scorpion phase when he was a kid.”

“What? They’re awesome,” I protest. “Sophia, has Damien told you about the pet rats we used to have?”

“Only about a million times,” she replies. “He keeps talking about bringing a couple home and making a giant obstacle course in our backyard.”

“Alright, we can have the Rat Olympics again!” Luc cheers around a mouthful of cake.

“No,” Sophia says flatly. Then she looks at Emma. “I don’t know how serious you and Finn are, but just know that this is what you’re in for, getting involved with a demon!”

“Hey, it’s not all bad,” Damien protests, wrapping an arm around Sophia’s waist.

“Not all,” she agrees, giving him a quick kiss.

“Except for your weird taste in party food,” Lucy adds, wrinkling her nose at a large bowl of dip on the table.

“What do you mean?” Luc asks. “Spicy hellfire beet mash is a demon specialty!”

“Wow, that’s a lot of words that don’t sound like they should be in the same sentence,” Emma says.

“It probably is too much for humans,” I say, scooping up a large mound on a chip. “Unless you don’t mind burning your esophagus.”

“Ugh, no way,” Lucy says. “I’ll stick with the cake, unless there are, like, little firebombs in there or something.”

“Why would there be?” Luc wrinkles his brow. “It’s a work party, not a newborn naming ceremony.”

“Wow, not even going to touch that one,” Lucy says, shaking her head.

“Don’t worry,” Sophia tells her. “The cake is completely human-safe. I made sure of that.”

“Thanks,” Lucy says, taking a large bite.

Emma wraps her arm around my waist and leans her head against my shoulder. “Thank you so much for this, Finn. I’ve never felt so valued and appreciated.”

I lean down and kiss the top of her head, inhaling the sweet scent of her hair as I do. “You’re very welcome, Emma.”

“I hope this is just the first of a lot of celebrations we have together,” she says, and my heart leaps.
