“Um, okay?” I say, confused as he hurries back inside. I look around at the dark woods; the sun set while Finn was making dinner. “I’ll just stay here, hoping that no animal decides to come join our dinner. Or make me its dinner.”

Silence. I turn back to the cabin. Through the windows I can see Finn upstairs, searching for something in his suitcase.

Is he looking for the car keys? Did he decide that he actually doesn’t love me, and now he’s going to make a break for it?

“You’re being an idiot,” I chide myself. “Maybe he wanted to make sure he packed enough socks, or something.”

I wince at how lame my words sound. But I can’t figure out what else Finn could be doing. Did he just remember that he had to send in some files? Did he forget about a deadline? What the hell is he doing?

Finally, Finn comes back outside. “Sorry about that,” he says as he walks across the deck.

“You going to tell me what the emergency was?” I ask, looking up at him.

Finn stops a few feet away and suddenly drops to one knee. “Are you hurt?” I ask, jumping up. “Finn, what the hell is going on?”

“Emma,” Finn says quietly, and I freeze as I see what he’s holding towards me.

It’s a small, black box.

And then he opens the lid.

And I see a gorgeous diamond ring sparkling in the moonlight.

“Emma, you are the most incredible, dynamic, intelligent woman I’ve ever met,” Finn says, gazing up at me with tears in his eyes. “You challenge me and inspire me. You frustrate the hell out of me sometimes, too,” he adds, and I laugh.

“But above all else, you fill my life with more joy, hope, and love than I ever thought possible,” Finn goes on. “I love you with all of my heart, with all of my being. Will you marry me?”

“Oh, Finn,” I say, smiling at him. “I love you, too. Being with you feels like coming home. It’s like I’ve found a part of myself I’ve been missing for my entire life. Yes, of course I’ll marry you!”

“Yes!” Finn yells, leaping up and wrapping his arms around me. He lifts me off the ground and spins me around as I laugh. “She said yes!” he yells into the woods. “She said yes!”

“You’re crazy!” I laugh, and he sets me down.

“Only about you,” Finn says.

“And cheesy, too,” I say and he grins.

“Let’s see if this fits.” Finn slides the ring on my left ring finger.

I hold my hand out in front of me. “Fits like it was made for me,” I say.

“Oh, Emma.” Finn kisses me. “I’m so glad you said yes.”

“I’m so glad you asked. Was that your plan all along?” I ask him.

“Kind of,” Finn says. “I’ve had the ring for a while, but I wanted to tell you that I loved you, first.”

“That makes sense.”

“And even after you said it back, I still wasn’t sure I had the nerve to do it tonight,” he confesses. “That’s what took me so long, when I went inside. I was giving myself a pep talk,” he admits sheepishly.

I burst out laughing. “For a second I thought you were looking for the keys! I had this image of you peeling out of here and leaving me!”

Finn laughs, too, then grows serious. “Never, Emma,” he says softly. “I’ll never leave you.”

“And I’ll never leave you,” I say, reaching up to him for another amazing kiss.
