“They are. You sure you want to do this?” She eyes the man standing silently behind me, his big hand on my shoulder.

“Absolutely.” I smile at him over my shoulder and he grins wickedly back at me.

“Let’s do this.”

We walk in and Bernice doesn’t announce us, just lets us walk in and catch them sitting there, unprepared.

“Hello, Mother, Father.”

They both eye me unhappily. “What is that man doing here?”

“He’s keeping me company. Taking care of me. Which he intends to do for the rest of our lives.”

“He’ll get tired of you.” My dad glares at him.

Sam steps around from behind me and he stands in front of him. “You know if you weren’t her father, I think I’d beat the shit out of you. You got my ex-wife to lie to her? What the hell did you hope to gain by that?”

“Get her away from you!” Jessica snaps. “She’s worth so much more than some dirty laborer.”

I nod my head. “Yeah. I’m worth one man. This one. You can’t break us up. I suggest you just stop trying. Because all you’re going to do is piss me off. And you don’t want to see me pissed off.”

Sam smirks. “I like to see it.”

I grin. “You’re just weird.”

“Anyway. What happened to her?”

“She found a sudden reason to get out of town.”

“What reason was that?”

I laugh. “I was going to kill her if she didn’t leave. Rip that bleached-out hair right out of her head.”

“That’s barbaric.”

“I don’t care, Mother. You fucked up. You fucked up bad. I don’t want anything to do with you two ever again. I intend to make sure that all my accounts are set up and away from yours. And I intend to make sure that you never get near my family again.”

“Family?”

Sam moves and kneels in front of me. “I think this is where I come in.” My eyes fill with tears as I see his quicksilver eyes sparkling as bright as the diamond in the box he’s holding out to me.

“I love you, Lily. Just you. I don’t need anything but you and I want you just the way you are. You don’t have to make yourself into something that you aren’t. Just love me the way I love you and I know we’ll be happy for the rest of our lives.”

I grasp his face in my hands and kiss him desperately. “I love you,” I whisper. “Yes, I’ll marry you.”

He grins. “I didn’t ask you yet.”

“I don’t need it. The ring is enough. Just put it on my hand.” He slips the platinum band on my finger and I smile. It’s so beautiful.”

“It was my mother’s. Family means a lot to me. And now that you’re my family, you are my first priority. I will love and cherish you for the rest of our lives and I will make you so happy that you didn’t even realize it was possible to have such a wonderful life.”

I nod my head. “You’re my family too.”

“That’s touching. But you won’t be able to live on that man’s salary,” my dad says.

“I will. I don’t need anything but him.” I smile and hug him.

“I guarantee we’ll be fine. I will make sure she’s well-taken care of.”
