“It was bound to happen, Felicia,” I say gently.

She shakes her head, cracking a smile. “I guess I thought it never would.”

Felicia is fun to be around, but it was never more than that. Still, I understand this is the end of our history together. She is on the list of women I need to break it off with after agreeing to marry Mia, so I’m glad it’s done.

“You’re going to be a faithful husband,” Luca says, sitting at the bar, having heard the conversation between me and Felicia.

“And a loyal son,” I say, although it feels like poison in my mouth.

Luca looks over at me curiously. “You want to be involved in the family business?”

I shrug. “I think that’s what Papa must have wanted. For us to merge our ideas and our men.”

Luca nods, looking at me with a smile. “Enzo was a smart man.”

I just sip my drink, looking at my watch. It’s been a little over two hours since I left Mia back at the pool.

“I need to go home to my future wife,” I say, and Luca claps me on the shoulder.

“You’re a good man, Dante.”

I want to laugh. I’m using his daughter and I have designs to kill him. So, “good” is not the best word to describe me.

I make my way through the party, saying my goodbyes, and finally get out of there, sighing as I sit at the steering wheel in my sports car.

I’m already socially exhausted, and I have to keep this personality “on” tonight, too, with Mia. It’s going to be like I’m playing a part for months, possibly a year or two, before I can get what I want.

I make it back home and Mia’s sitting in the living room, looking bored, her head hanging off the couch.

“You’re home!” she exclaims, sitting up too fast and swaying.

I can’t help but chuckle at her. “I’ve got everything for ziti in the kitchen. You want to help?”

“Okay,” she says hesitantly. “But I’m no good at even boiling water.”

“I don’t know if I believe that,” I murmur, but I honestly do. Mia may not be as spoiled as some of the famiglia princesses that I’ve met, but her father takes care of her.

I put her on chopping the onions and tears are streaming unbidden down her face by the time she’s done.

I handle the garlic and then wash my hands, chuckling and wiping her tears away.

“Didn’t mean to make you cry,” I tease, and Mia sniffles, laughing.

“Elena has a trick but I don’t know what it is,” she complains.

“Well, it’s all done now, just need to wait on the sauce.” I put all the vegetables in to simmer and finish up the sauce before leading Mia out of the kitchen to the foyer.

“What do we do while we wait?” she asks, smirking up at me.

“I can think of a couple things,” I say in a low tone, but Mia gets down on the floor and crawls toward where I’m standing, putting her hands on my belt buckle.

I look down at her with lust-filled eyes and think maybe being married isn’t so bad after all.

MIA

I’ve lost my nerves since Dante and I made love for the first time, and I’m ready for more, so I lick my lips and unbuckle his slacks, tugging them down over his ass along with his boxer briefs.
