“I can’t be sure it’s him, but he’s certainly always been after me,” I tell him.
Dante nods. “Thank you for telling me, pretty girl.”
His voice sounds exhausted. I know that he must be tired. I’m lying on his good side so I snuggle up next to him and he puts an arm around me.
“Get some rest,” I tell him, but he’s already softly snoring.
Now it’s me that’s awake, alone with my thoughts.
It takes me a long time to fall asleep.

DANTE
Iwake up feeling groggy as all hell with Mia cuddled up next to me, sleeping fitfully. My arm has fallen asleep around her and I wince as she flops around.
“Mia,” I call softly. “Wake up, pretty girl.”
She stirs and opens her blue eyes. They look bloodshot. I grit my teeth, thinking of all the ways I’m going to destroy Vincenzo Gallo.
It’ll start a turf war, because we’ve always been on good terms, but I couldn’t care less. Coward bastard, not even showing up to take Mia himself.
I guess I’m grateful. If he’d been there, I’d have killed him on the spot.
This way, I get to have a little fun.
“I’m awake,” she mumbles, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. “What time is it?
“I don’t know. I can’t really move,” I say, chuckling, and Mia’s eyes widen.
She scrambles off the bed. “I’m sorry, did I hurt you?”
I shake my head. “No, no. Everything’s fine. How are your ribs?”
She’s holding her side, so I know they hurt.
“They’re okay,” she lies.
I frown. “I’ll call Nico. He has those pills Jimmy gave him.”
“I don’t need any pills,” she argues.
“Just one,” I tell her. “So that you can get some rest. I know you didn’t sleep well last night. You were tossing and turning.”
She winces. “I just kept having these dreams...”
“I know, baby,” I say softly, and reach for my phone on the nightstand with a grimace.
Mia grabs it up and hands it to me.
“Don’t stretch, you’ll pop a stitch,” she scolds.
I smile and take it from her. “Thank you, Nurse Mia,” I tease.
“Damn right,” she says with a pout, and I wish she was closer so I could kiss her.
I call Nico and he picks up right away.
