“I only hit him a couple of times,” Luca says almost sheepishly, and we both walk into the room together. I have to duck slightly to get through the doorway, but it’s surprisingly roomy enough to fit us both in height, anyway. We’re standing shoulder to shoulder, looking down at the panicked Vincenzo.

Luca rips off the duct tape, and Vincenzo yelps as it tears skin off his lips. Then he removes the rag from Vincenzo’s mouth.

“Listen, Luca, if you’re pissed about the dry-cleaning joint—” Vincenzo starts and Luca slaps him across the face, open handed.

Vincenzo grunts but doesn’t scream, gritting his teeth, blood crusted around his mouth and nose, his lips red and chapped.

“I don’t give a fuck about the dry-cleaning joint. You took mydaughter,” Luca growls, looking down at Vincenzo disdainfully.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Vincenzo says, and just looking at his lying, ugly face makes my blood boil.

I punch him in the nose and hear the crack as his nose breaks. My shoulder screams with pain but I don’t care. Vincenzo makes a sound like a wounded animal, snuffling and whimpering.

“I want to do the honors,” I say, and Luca shrugs as if he doesn’t care one way or the other.

“All right,” Luca says. “But don’t make it easy. I want to watch.”

Vincenzo trembles. “I haven’t had anything to do with Mia since Lorenzo hurt me last time I tried to date her,” he said, his voice nasal and choked.

“Do you think it’ll do any good? Lying to me?” I say, and to save my shoulder, I lean back to kick him in the chest. All the breath comes out of him in a rush and blood sprays on my shirt. I look down, disgusted, lowering my boot back down to the floor as Vincenzo gasps.

I look around the panic room and there’s a little medical table full of instruments. Some of them look very interesting. I pick up a pair of pliers, and Vincenzo yells something incoherent, barely able to breathe.

I change my mind, and Vincenzo relaxes. Then I pick up a small scalpel and lean down, holding it to his right cheekbone.

“What are you doing?” he whispers, his voice liquid.

“I think I might have to cut off this ugly, lying face of yours,” I comment idly, and Vincenzo bucks in the chair. It rocks and clangs, but Vincenzo isn’t going anywhere.

I slice into his skin, just slightly, and watch the blood trickle down his face. Vincenzo starts to scream.

I look back at Luca and he’s got his arms folded across his chest, watching with a slight smile on his face. It’s a little scary, truth be told. It won’t be easy to kill Luca Lorenzo, but I’ve never imagined that it would be.

I slice down to his chin and stop, admiring my handiwork.

“It’s not my fault,” Vincenzo spits out, glaring up at me with his beady eyes. “She was just walking down the street in a pair of shorts, her ass hanging out. Not my fault you married a whore.”

Rage boils through me and I go after him with the scalpel, but Luca pulls me back, putting a hand on my shoulder. I barely note the movement when he raises his gun, cocks it, and shoots Vincenzo point blank in the face. I blink, looking down at the tiny hole in his forehead.

“No one calls my baby girl a whore,” Luca snarls,

I watch as a drop of the blood drops down onto the floor, swirling slowly down the drain.

“Now,” Luca says, clapping his hands together. “Would you like some tea?”

I smile weakly and Luca shuts the door of the panic room. I assume he has a cleaner, just like I do, and he’ll call him up after tea.

Luca leaves me alone in the living room while he makes the tea. When he returns, he has a crisp white button-up shirt folded in one hand and a tray with a teapot and tea cups in the other.

“Thank you,” I murmur. Luca hasn’t changed, still covered in blood.

“I figure you don’t want the missus to know what we’ve been up to,” Luca says with a chuckle.

I shake my head. “She’s been worried about me.”

Luca nods. “My missus worries about me, too. That’s why I send her away to her sister’s when I have business. I send all of the staff with her, tell her I need her well taken care of. I don’t want any one flapping their jaws about what I do in my own home.”

I nod slowly, sitting down for tea.
