“You keepsayingthat,” Leo whines and Nico punches him in the arm.

“Who’s thecapo, huh? Dante or you?” Nico taunts.

Leo shuts up.

I’ll just have to find another way. I hate myself for not doing it the other night, for not taking care of it. But if he’d been willing to let me in his house alone, without any men or staff, he’ll be willing to do it again.

Thing of it is, after the conversation we’d had at dinner and the impressive way he’s taken out the Gallos, if I hadn’t been planning to kill him for months, I may have liked the man.

I’ll bide my time, figure out how to do it the easiest, cleanest way, to save Mia as much stress as I can.

Then I’ll take care of it, once and for all, no matter how guilty I might feel about Mia.

“We better get out of here,” Leo suggests, and it’s the smartest thing he’s said all day.

We walk back to the car, put away the guns and go to a local diner, ordering some greasy burgers and fries.

“So, when are you going to do it?” Leo asks.

“You fucking bulldog,” Nico complains. “I’m so tired of hearing you bitch about this.”

“I’m going to do it when it’s the right time,” I tell Leo, and he stares at me.

“Is this about that pretty daughter of his?” he asks.

“She’s my wife,” I snarl, giving him a warning look.

“In name only, right? That’s what you said, Dante.”

I roll my shoulders, annoyed. “It’s none of your business.”

“Luca Lorenzo killed your father,” Leo says under his breath, in a low tone so no one can hear us.

“Shut your stupid mouth,” Nico says, knocking his shoulder against his. “We’re in public, you idiot.”

Leo shuts up, but I’m irritated because he’s right.

I’ve been putting off killing Luca because of Mia and for no other reason. I’ve been daydreaming about killing him for months, ever since my father was killed.

I know that I’ve lost sight of what matters, but I’m conflicted.

“I’ll get it done. Don’t you worry,” I say to Leo, and take a big bite of my burger, hoping he’ll let it go.

He gives me a wary look but keeps his mouth shut, thank God.

“You’re right to be careful, capo,”Nico says in a low voice, and he’s not a man that often worries, so I’m a little afraid to see the concern on his face.

Have I bitten off more than I can chew?

MIA

When Alberto comes back from the bathroom I’m about to exit the door, on the phone, trying to call my dad. He isn’t answering and I’m panicking.

Alberto makes a grunt in the back of his throat and shuts the door as I open it, shaking his head and blocking me from exiting the door.

“You’re going to let me leave this house,” I tell him firmly. “Alone.”
