The man stiffened and jerked before slamming into the floor.

“Someone call 911!” a server screamed.

“I’m going to escort him to the realm he belongs in, little bee. I have set the magic to keep you invisible until you get into the car.” Zell leaned down and kissed me while people surrounded the body on the floor. “I’ll see you before bed.”

When I looked up, the apparition of the man was standing over his dead body with a panicked face. Zell grabbed his arm and they disappeared.

I snatched the bottle of wine from the table and filled up my glass.

Knowing I was purging the world of monstrous people made me feel like I was working to earn redemption for my own horrible actions. With one less evil person on Earth, a feeling of relief flowed through me. I crossed my legs and sipped my wine as I thought about what innocent person I was going to save tomorrow.

Epilogue

Kavari

Tenyearslater.. .

Zell was by my side the day I died. Only a week before my fortieth birthday a drunk driver hit my car. After a month on life support, my dad had them pull the plug. It was a bittersweet moment for me as I watched my friends gather around when they turned off the machines. But Zell promised me that we would secretly peek in on my friends from time to time. Not to mention,I now get to spend eternity with him . . . that is, if the king grants it.

“Are you ready, honey bee?” Zell asked as I stared up at the beautiful castle.

I nodded, the nervousness stealing my words.

As the guards held the door for us, we entered, and Zell led me straight to the throne room.

“Is this her?” a woman that seemed to be in her mid-twenties asked, her hands rubbing her round belly. “I’ve been waiting years for this moment!”

“This is her, My Queen,” Zell said before stopping to bow. “My fiancée, Kavari Dexter.”

“Welcome to the Abaddon Kingdom! I am King Avaress, and this is my wife, the reigning Queen Astrid.”

“Nice to meet you, Kavari. I have heard many wonderful stories about you over the years.” The queen’s smile was kind and sweet and it helped soothe my anxiety.

“I heard you had a request for us,” the king said with an eager grin.

“She would like—”

“Let her speak for herself, Zell,” the queen interrupted. “She didn’t come all the way to this realm to have you speak for her.”

Zell glanced at me. “The floor is yours.”

Dropping his hand, I cleared my throat and took a step forward before clasping my hands in front of me. “I am here to ask for absolution. The heinous crime I committed only three months after my seventeenth birthday was premeditated, but I felt it was a necessary evil.”

“You want me to pardon you so you don’t burn for eternity?” the king asked, a tinge of amusement in his voice. “Even if you have collected over two hundred sinful souls, I’m not sure—”

“She will be pardoned,” the queen stated abruptly. “If you know what’s good for you, Avaress Vance.”

The king smiled as he glanced at his wife. “It’s not that easy, my love. I must speak to Baharet first.”

“You can speak to your brother all you want, but if he doesn’t want to see my wrath, he’ll do what’s best.”

Did she just threaten the King of the Underworld?I asked Zell in my thoughts.

“She did,” the king answered, causing my eyes to widen because I had no idea he could hear our conversations. “She’s a silly woman who always gets what she wants.” The king’s massive legs tightened as he rose from his seat. “As far as laws are concerned, you were under the age of penalty. However, you two made one hell of a team, so my brother has a proposal for you. He’ll be here any minute now.”

“I’m here now,” the husky voice of a man said, appearing beside me.

When I glanced over at him, I was expecting something different—maybe a devil of a man? A real demon with gnarly teeth and big curved horns? Other than his dark hair and sinister golden eyes, he just looked normal.
