“Why can’t you just accept that I like him?”

“Because you don’t belong with a guy like Troy. What will your parents say? Your Aunt Amy will hate him, your siblings won’t be able to stand him...”

“They’re not the ones dating Troy.” Charlotte crosses her arms. “They’ll just have to accept my choice.”

“Thought you were smarter than that,” Robbie says hoarsely. “Why make the wrong choice when you can make the right one? You and I have so much more in common.” He takes a step closer to her and I tense, ready to lunge at him if needed. “Chuck, that nonsense Troy said upstairs about me being...”

“Right, that’s totally your business,” Charlotte says quickly with flushed cheeks, “you don’t have to explain yourself to me. I think it’s great that you’re into men.”

Putting my knuckles to my mouth, I stifle a laugh.

“But I’m not into men,” Robbie grits. “I like women. Women like you...”

“You’re too funny,” Charlotte says nervously, letting out a half-hysterical laugh, “But we should see where Troy is at...” She’s about to move when Robbie stops her.

“What did Troy tell you about himself?” he snaps and she frowns.

“T...that he’s a mechanic and that he had a difficult upbringing.” She pinches her lip. “And that he got into some minor trouble recently.”

“Minor trouble?” Robbie snorts. “So, he didn’t tell you he was released from detention just two days ago?”

I’m going to kill him.

Turning pale, Charlotte drops down on the couch, staring up at Robbie with wide eyes. “Detention? What for?”

Sounding pretty pleased as if he knows he hit a sore spot, Robbie replies, “For stealing a car because that’s what he’s like. Greedy enough to take someone else’s property for his own selfish agenda.”

Charlotte swallows. “Why did he need money that badly?”

“To pay for his mother’s treatment. She was diagnosed with lung cancer recently and...”

Gasping, Charlotte clasps a hand over her mouth, her eyes filling with tears. “Oh, that poor sweetheart...”

“Wait, what?” Robbie snaps, sounding thoroughly annoyed.

He grunts as if offended when Charlotte brushes past him and I hurry to pretend as if I was just coming out of the room. I bump into Charlotte on the staircase. She throws her arms around me, squeezing me to her and she’s shivering.

“You’re so brave,” she whispers, “so strong, so selfless...”

She sounds as if she’s in awe of me and I smirk, tightening my hold around her. Her hands grasp for me, her lips seeking mine and I moan into her mouth when she gives a hot, frantic kiss. Bliss erupts through my body but it’s short-lived. Things aren’t running as smoothly as I had hoped for. We’ve run into a problem. A big one.

From the moment, I saw Charlotte I knew I wouldn’t let anything stand in the way of us.

Robbie’s standing in the way.

My eyes darkly rise and I know he’s waiting for us downstairs. He wants Charlotte to belong to him, wants to take what’s mine away from me but I can’t let that happen.

He’s playing a dangerous game.

And if I were Robbie, I’d be very afraid.

The sea air makes Charlotte shiver as we come walking down the pier. She’s pressed up against me, shielding her face with her hand against the wind. Robbie walks ahead and throws an aggravated glare over his shoulder every now and then.

I pretend that everything’s fine but on the inside I’m boiling.

My eyes are zoning in on Robbie, my gaze is a red haze and I’m targeting him, feeling a deep need to punish him for what he tried to do. Luckily, it didn’t work. Charlotte feels closer to me than ever and whenever she looks up at me, her eyes are filled with warmth and admiration.
