“Nah, I’m not lying. And you know what else...,” satisfaction flares in me, “she moans like the sweetest slut in the world when I fuck her.”

A snarl escapes Robbie. “Watch your mouth!” Distress causes him to shake his head. “See, this is what you do. You’re pushy, you force people to stoop to your level.” He pokes me in the chest. “Stop pushing Charlotte around.”

Or I could just push him.

Letting out a growl, I put my hands on his chest and shove. Panic lights up his eyes before he topples, screaming, falling over the railing and there’s a splash. I look down, struggling to hide the smile around my mouth. Robbie won’t make it, the waves are rough tonight and he has never been a good swimmer.

“What happened?” Charlotte yells, running over to me, “I heard screaming, was that Robbie?”

“He fell over, I couldn’t stop it, it went too f...fast,” I say, forcing my voice to tremble and reach into my pocket. “We need to call 911.”

“There’s no time,” Charlotte shrills, clasping the railing and throws one leg over, “we need to help him....”

What the hell, she’s afraid of the water, she’s not supposed to...I reach out but it’s too late. She has already thrown herself into the sea.

“No!” I bellow, feeling the blood drain from my face and my heart stops. Then I jump in right after her.

Troy

Robbie ended up surviving, which is just...just fucking terrific.

I stare straight ahead with my hands on my knees, sitting in the waiting room together with Charlotte. She’s safe, warm and her head is on my shoulder. I should be grateful but I can’t relax. Robbie survived which means he might tell on me.

Groaning inwardly, I straighten my legs and Charlotte shifts. I can’t believe she jumped into that water after him. She ignored her fear to save him and I don’t just feel jealousy, but agony. It lies like a heavy block over my chest. What if she cares about him more than she cares about me?

I’ll die. I’ll fucking die if that’s true.

My throat strains and I swallow, growing dizzy and I blink, focusing on the clock on the wall to keep myself in check. Stroking my knuckles down Charlotte’s arm, I murmur, “Why did you do it? You’re afraid of the sea and yet you went after him?”

She wraps the blankets she was given, tighter around her shoulders. “I don’t know, I just reacted.” A smile crosses her face. “Or maybe I just wanted to impress you.” She links our fingers together and doesn’t ask why I didn’t attempt to save Robbie.

“Consider me impressed, but next time I’d prefer it if you cared more about your own life instead.”

“Did I scare you that much?” she says in a soft tone and I nod.

“My adrenaline won’t let me catch a break.” I swallow. “For a moment there, I thought I was going to lose you.”

“You’ll never lose me,” Charlotte sighs. “Even if we...um break up someday, you’ll always have a special place in my heart.”

Cold shivers cascade down my spine.

“Why would we break up?” I say in a strained tone. Why the hell is she talking about breaking up? “Charlotte, why the fuck are you saying that?”

Flinching, she stops squeezing my hand and her lashes flutter in surprise. “I’m not...but things happen, you just never know.”

Funny. Because I do know, I know I only want her and I’ll always want her. “If you’re not in my future then I don’t want to exist in it,” I clip and she gasps. Pulling her head away from my shoulder, she looks like she’s about to protest and tell me I need to be reasonable but then she bites her lip, staying quiet as if she knows there’s no point in arguing with me.

“And do I?” I say after a moment of silence and I try not to grit my teeth.

“Do you what?”

“Do I have a special place in your heart, right now?”

“Yes.”

A thrill explodes in my chest. “Does that mean you love me?”
