Sure enough, it’s my boss, and as the only connection I still have to my father, he’s letting me know that, yet again, his brother has gotten himself in trouble. Fucking hell.

I clench my teeth so hard I think they might crack. Dealing with my father is the last thing I want to do, but apparently, my dearest uncle is too busy with a client. The plastic case on my phone squeaks as my grip tightens. One of these days…

Standing, I pull on my pants and look back at Macy.

“I need to go. There’s been…a little incident. But I’ll be right back.”

“What do you mean, an incident?” Concern lights up her eyes.

“It’s fine. My father just does what he always does, and I need to bail him out of jail.”

I kiss the top of her head and go to grab a shirt from the closet, seeing as the other one is destroyed.

“What? You’re serious? I can’t let you do that by yourself. I’ll go with you.” She stands, wrapping the sheet around her as she looks for her clothes.

“It’s fine. My dad just got too drunk and knocked someone out at a bar downtown. It’s unfortunately not uncommon. I’ll just be gone for like an hour.”

“No way. I’m going with you. I get why you didn’t enjoy the photo if he’s always like this. Don’t go by yourself. Let me be your backup.”

I’ve never had backup, not really. Not even my uncle can be bothered to deal with this right now, and Macy, who’s known me for less than a week, wants to…help.

She meets my eyes as she pulls on her dress and holds out her hand, and against all better judgment, I take it.

When we reach the jail, I pay my father’s bail. Thankfully the other person isn’t pressing charges. One of the officers escorts my father out from the holding cell. While the old man reeks of cheap beer, he’s clearly sober now. A night in the drunk tank clearing away his inebriation and leaving a somehow more unpleasant person behind.

The officer addresses my father. “Your bail has been posted, but you’ll need to return to court to face the destruction of property and public intoxication charges. As discussed, the PD has been assigned to your case.”

The ingrate barely listens to the cop and saunters up like he’s only been to detention.

“Yeah, yeah. Now where’s Gio?”

My father searches for his brother and comes up short, his eyes finally landing on me as he realizes I’ve been sent to clean up his mess, again.

“Oh, no. Get the fuck outta here, boy. Where’s your uncle?” His hoarse voice speaks of too many cigarettes and shots.

I roll my eyes. “He sent me.”

“I don’t need your damned help! I had it handled!”

“I can see that.” I nod toward the officer, who looks about as done with my dad’s shit as I am. “Let’s just go. I’ll drop you off at your apartment, assuming you still live there?”

“The fuck you will. I got this, you ungrateful whelp. And I’ll be telling your uncle all about how you’re using his money.”

My father eyes Macy, and I instinctively step between them. “Enough.”

“Yeah, right, like you boss me around.” His lecherous eyes roam over Macy, who’s standing silently by my side. “And who’s this? I know you’re desperate for some pussy. Looks like you bought yourself a nice one!”

It takes everything not to punch him in the jaw, and as it is, the officer nearby steps forward.

“I said enough,” I grind out.

“Yeah, yeah. Fucking trash like you ain’t gonna do nothing. I got my way home. You go enjoy your date.”

My father pushes past, smashing his shoulder into me, which sends him tumbling forward. I don’t turn to watch him leave, but as he passes, I hear him whisper a final jab to remember him by.

“You’re no better than me, Jett. No one would ever love a monster like you.”
