“You wouldn’t!”
I just laugh, my heart swelling as my family joins in with me. I go to help when Mom and Dad start to clear the table, only to be shooed away now that I’m in a ‘delicate condition.’ Shaking my head, I head to get some fresh air on the back porch.
I can hear my mom playfully arguing with my dad as the door closes behind me. Breathing deeply, I take in the smell of the cool country air. Crickets chirp, and the full moon shines a crisp white in the deep blue sky.
A breeze creeps over my skin, and I sigh. The door creaks slightly behind me, and then Jett is at my back, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me close.
“She still yelling at Dad?”
“It’s mostly calmed down. You definitely know how to push her buttons, though.”
“As is my right as her daughter.” I turn and face him.
“You might just wind up on the other side of that arrangement, little dove.” Jett nods down to my belly and then pulls me under his chin.
“Well, ce la vie.”
A pleasant quiet surrounds us, and I take in the musky fragrance of Jett’s cologne. I wrap my arms around his waist, more emotions threatening me with more tears. He can now add allowing my mother to meet her grandchild to his list of good deeds.
“Are you all right?” Jett pulls back, staring down at me.
“Me? I’ve never been better.”
We chuckle at the memory, and I let myself feel all the emotions brimming inside me. Jett takes my chin in his hand and guides my mouth to his, pressing his lips to mine and holding me tight.
He pulls back, smiling. “I didn’t think it could get better at that moment. I was wrong. Every moment with you is better than the last. I… I didn’t think I’d ever have a ‘happy family’ again after I lost my mom. And then you came into my life.”
I wipe under my eyes as I look into the eyes of my amazing husband.
“Forever, Macy. I will forever be glad that I found you, found my true family, and found my home.”
Jett’s lips meet mine once more, and we kiss beneath the twinkling stars.
From lost to found, frightened to free. Choosing my life with Jett is the best thing I’ve ever done.
