“She won’t come out of her room. The moment she found out, she locked herself inside,” Cain says.

At that moment, Cathal arrives. “Nina, I got here as fast as I could.”

She rushes into his arms instantly, tears coming faster now. “Thank you. Oh, it’s all a disaster!”

He holds her as she sobs, and I wonder how he or Bella will keep the secret from her, that we killed her father.

Cain remains silent, still clutching his half-drunk tumbler of whiskey.

Bella leans toward me. “Can you talk to Cain?”

I’m a little surprised she asks me, since I’ve never been much of a mentor, but a weight has fallen on his shoulders tonight. “Sure.”Her brother isn’t a bad guy, but he has the potential to end up as bad as Gio or a much better leader.

Bella follows me over to speak with him too.

“If you need any pointers, I can help,” Isiah says.

Bella places her hand on Cain’s shoulder. “You are going to be okay,” she says.

Cain sighs heavily. “I’m not cut out for this shit.”

She gives me pleading look.

“You can shadow me in London for a few weeks when we return, help you learn the ropes.”

Cain’s eyes widen. “Really?”

I nods. “Yes, but I won’t take any shit. You’ll do as you’re told and take it seriously.”

Cain straightens, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. “Okay, that would be great. Thanks, man.”

I stiffen. “First rule, don’t call me man.”

“Shit, okay, sorry.”

“We won’t be staying too much longer, just until after the funeral, so you’ll accompany us to London when we leave,” I say.

“Thank you,” Cain says, sitting up straighter and taking a sip of his drink. “I need all the help I can get.”

He does need all the help he can get.

“No problem. We’ll stay here tonight, I guess, in a spare room?” I look at Bella, knowing it would be what’s expected.

She nods. “Yes, of course. I’m pretty tired.”

Cain sighs. “I think we all are. Doubt I’ll get much sleep, but I’m going to retire.” He stands and gives us both a nod and then disappears off.

“I could do with lying down,” Bella says.

“Me too, love.”

“I’ll just say goodnight to my sisters.” She breaks away from me and goes to hug all three of them, before returning to take my hand.

I lead her out of the living room.

“Where are we going to sleep?” I ask.

She grabs my hand. “The best guest room. It’s on the top floor.”
