But the worst part about that night was the moment he died. It’s imprinted in my mind like a terrible nightmare that I can never stop replaying. We had been sitting at home playing video games and had ordered pizza when four men with black hoods broke in and threatened us, asking where our dad was.

To this day, I still don’t know the identity of those four men. But, I intend to find out. When we told them he wasn’t here, they searched the entire place and before leaving, one of them with dark brown eyes stopped in front of the two of us and looked between us as if making a decision.

And then he shot Aiden right between the eyes without blinking.

Tell your father that’s a warning from Gio Benedetto. It will be him next if he doesn’t get the fuck out of town.

Aiden’s expression as the bullet tore through his flesh was blank and, the blood, there was so much blood. I remember the surreal feeling of time standing still as I gazed into the dark hole I’d dug and looked at his lifeless body wrapped in an old tarp. It’s not the way I should have said goodbye, making the pain too deep for words to express. Our promise to stay together no matter where life took us was broken in an instant, and it was too late to do anything about it.

I shake my head. “I can’t talk about it. Let’s just say the Benedetto family is the reason he’s dead.”

Cathal nods. “I get that, but you should consider sparing Nina and Bella from your plan. Don’t let this anger consume you or damage what you both stood for: mercy and compassion.” His eyes are blazing with determination. “You both hated how your father was with people. Don’t turn into him.”

His words cut deep and my immediate reaction is anger. “I’m nothing like him.”

“Then prove it,” Cathal says.

I know deep down he’s right. All the Benedetto children are innocent, to an extent. Although, Cain, Maria and Luciana are very much like their parents. It’s not them that I’m angry at. It’s Gio Benedetto. He’s the reason Aiden is dead and buried. Yet, waiting this long for revenge has made my need for it deepen and widen to encase everyone who bears the same name as him.

I look Cathal in the eye. “I’ll think about it,” I say simply.

He smiles and lifts his glass up. “Cheers to that.”

I clink my glass against his and take a long swig, a weight lifted from my shoulders having my friend back, even if it does make me a little uneasy.

“You weren’t gone nearly long enough,” a sweet voice speaks from behind me in the entranceway of the Benedetto’s home. “I’m disappointed.”

I smirk and turn to her, my gaze settling on those vivid blue eyes of hers. “Your lips say one thing, but your eyes tell a different story, love.”

“They don’t,” she snaps, crossing her arms over her chest.

My lips quirk, and I take a step closer. “I see want every single time you look at me.” I lean forward toward her. “Especially since I made you come for me.”

My words send an inferno blazing across her cheeks. “Go to hell,” she hisses.

A smirk tugs at my lips as I take another step forward. “That’s certainly no way to speak to your fiancé, is it?”

I watch as the fight drains from her body, as she has nothing to say in return. There’s no denying the fact that in a few short hours, our fates will be bound together—sealed by a contract that will outline the terms of our upcoming nuptials—and there will be no turning back.

I step even closer so that our bodies are flush against each other. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you missed me.”

“I didn’t miss you one bit!”

I chuckle, a deep sound. “I can still hear your moans while I made you climax for me, love. I remember you crying out my name.”

“God! Will you just stop?” she hisses, her mouth thinning into a tight line. There’s no denying the heat radiating from our bodies as my gaze remains glued to hers.

“I hope you two aren’t already arguing,” Gio chides, approaching.

I take a step back from her and put some distance between us, trying to douse the fire that’s ignited inside me. Gio may have laid his cards on the table, but until a deal is set in stone, I won’t risk my plan.

“Just some friendly debating,” I lie.

“Bullshit,” Bella says, glaring at me. “As always, he’s been an arrogant son of a bitch.”
