He didn’t fancy returning home, and no harm would come from hanging out with Duke Elwood.

“Let’s do it. I’d like to see the bulls too if you want some company.”

“I sure would,” Duke replied as they started walking towards the show. “I heard Rick Campbell scored an eighty-six yesterday. That’ll be hard to beat. I hope he wins the championship.”

“Why, is he a friend of yours?”

“Not exactly, in fact, think he’s dating a girl I went out with a couple of times, but he’s a decent guy and he missed winning by just a couple of points last year.”

“I’ve heard of him, but I wouldn’t be able to pick him out of a crowd. I follow the broncs more than the bulls, and I get off on the barrel racin’, especially the girls. I love to watch ‘em fly around the ring in their tight jeans.”

“No shit,” Duke agreed with a chuckle. “Then I guess you must love the trick riders.”

“Never watched ‘em. Aren’t they for the kids.”

“You don’t know what you’re missing. The girl I was just talking about will be performing later today. She wears skintight, stretchy pants, like they’re painted on. She may as well be naked.”

“You’re shittin’ me. Why didn’t I know about this?”

“You do now.”

“Damn, Duke, I owe you one.”

“You can buy me that beer. It’s starting to heat up.”

“Thanks to you,” John replied with a chuckle. “Now all I can think about is a naked girl, and me with a can of paint and a paintbrush.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

After sitting at a table devouring hamburgers, fries and a couple of beers, John was in a much better mood. As cute girls in tight jeans and cut off T-shirts wandered by, he eyed them up and down, wishing he was a smooth talker or had the money to lure them into his bed.

“Hey, Duke, that doll in the pink shirt…look at her tits,” he whispered, leaning across the table. “I sure would like to know her better.”

“That’s Lacey Lane,” Duke replied, whispering back as he waved to her. “My dad plays golf with her father. He owns Lane Construction.”

“No shit. But Lacey Lane? What kinda name is that?”

“A rich one,” Duke replied with a chuckle. “Rich families like to use first and last names starting with the same letter for their kids.”

“So why aren’t you called Edward Elwood?”

“Hah, you’re a funny guy. I think it’s mostly for the girls, and we’re not rich like the Lanes. Don’t get me wrong, my dad does pretty well and he knows important people, but he’s in the middle of the ladder, not the top. Though he sure tries hard to get there.”

“If you’re the middle, I’m not even on the first rung,” John grunted.

“I thought you made decent money selling horses.”

“Yeah, well, I’ve gotta find ‘em to sell ‘em, and the market’s tough right now,” he said with a sigh, his upbeat mood starting to fade as he thought about the three beauties he’d had in his field.

“Finish your beer and let’s get over to the stands. The bulls will be starting soon and I’d like decent seats,” Duke declared. “Hey, I just had a thought. Why don’t we hit the tavern tonight? It’s packed with babes after the show.”

“I wish I could but I’m banned.”

“No shit. Why?”

“A guy said the wrong thing at the wrong time and I kinda lost it.”

“No sweat. The guy who owns the place is a friend of mine. I’ll get you in.”
