“Fuck,” he cursed, his head falling forward, his fingers digging into her thighs.

Raana dipped her head to capture his mouth again, her hand slipping beneath the fabric to stroke him. Once, twice. Goddess, it felt like he’d waited an eternity for her to touch him again. To touch her again. Between her hand and her shadows that had found spots along his skin that he hadn’t even realized would drive him mad, Adrien found himself on the edge. But he wouldn’t fall over it without her.

He’d buy her new clothes.

He shredded through any barrier that remained between them until he pressed the head of his cock against her soaking entrance. The escape tunnel turned heady with the scent of their arousal. He eased into her, retreated, eased in, and retreated, inch by painstaking, heavenly inch until he was entirely inside her, her heat clenching around him, and the world became nothing but these walls and the woman he could never have.

His everything and nothing at all.

Adrien braced one hand on the wall behind her, using the other to hold her up, then pulled out and slammed into her again, making her bite back a cry as she threw her head back.

Exposing her neck to him.

Do it.

He wanted to. So fucking badly, he wanted to. But there was this otherworldly sense nagging him to think, to stop.

Adrien ignored it, watching her face as he slid out and plunged into her again. Again. Again. Building a rhythm that Raana matched so perfectly that he couldn’t comprehend how they hadn’t been made for each other.

Her fingernails drew blood from his back as she moved her hips, as if trying to take him deeper, asking for more of him. So, he pushed her legs up against her chest, angled himself, and thrust harder.

“Yes,” she breathed, taking everything he gave, pulling him closer with her hands, with her shadows, as her inner muscles tightened around him. “Yes, yes, yes.”

“Fuck—look at me.”

Raana did, and it nearly sent Adrien over the edge.

Winter.

Stunning, forbidden, dangerous…inevitable.

Adrien closed the distance between them, kissing her and fucking her like it was the last time he ever would. Until only his mouth on hers had kept her cries from resounding down the cavern.

But then he brought his lips to her neck.

One bite. One mark.

Everything and nothing.

You don’t know what it means—he’d said it to her, but maybe he hadn’t truly known what this meant either.

Stop and think.

He couldn’t. There was only her.

So, Adrien drew his canines and claimed Raana as his.

CHAPTER39

KAI

Kai couldn’t deny he hated this. He knew Ameera had been right, knew he couldn’t bear every burden on his own, and knew he had to allow his friends to make their own choices, but as he took in his family scattered around the house ravaged by rot and destroyed by a monster, all he felt was dread.

They’d left Mimas by noon with a well-played excuse about a pertinent issue back in Deimos, but that hadn’t convinced Kai enough that Verena hadn’t been agitated by their departure.

That was two members of pack leadership that he’d pissed off today. According to Sol, who’d just left the house, Beta Sampson hadn’t appreciated Kai not being there to speak with him when he’d come to retrieve Eli’s body. Kai’s extended condolences through his delta could only go so far. But that was another fire he would worry about on another day.

Finishing off the last of the chicken Jonah had made—a feast for them all before they left—and wiping some of the sleep out of his eyes from the nap Isla had forced him to take when they’d beat everyone else here, he watched as his mate, now reunited with the pup slumbering happily in her lap, and Jonah attempted to piece together a logical route into the Wilds from the markers they’d gathered.
