She couldn’t stop herself from throwing her head back with a laugh.

Slowly, she turned to face him, failing to keep her features neutral. “Really?”

That heart-fluttering smile had remained on his face—and so did that bulge in his pants. “I am averylucky man.”

The low words tiptoed down her spine, wrenching the horrors from her mind. Like he knew they would because healwaysknew how to fix her.

Running her tongue lazily over her bottom lip, Isla spun back to the antechamber’s entrance. The clicking of the door’s lock beneath her fingers got lost in the sound of her blood rushing through her veins, so loud in her ears. Eager and needy.

Intently, Kai watched as she strode back to him. Every languid step she took was taken in with a predator’s stare. When she leaned down, bracing her hands on either side of his chair, closing him in, though it gave him a perfect view of her breasts, his eyes never left her face.

“Beautiful,” he breathed.

“Let me put you out of your misery.” She lowered her hands from the arms of the chairs to his thighs, parting his legs further and carefully dropping to her knees between them. “It’s not like it will take long, anyway.”

The look on Kai’s face, then, made her want to damn everything and straddle him.

She ran a hand along his length, making him jerk and curse and tip his head back.

“Look at me,” she demanded, each of her movements assured though inside, her body thrummed.

Kai’s darkened eyes glittered with a challenge when they met hers, his chest a deep rise and fall. He reached forward, gathering her hair and gripping it behind her neck with a firm hand. “I barely know how to stop.”

Isla loosened his belt, unfastened the button, and was moments from setting him free—

A knock rapped at the door.

Isla froze.

“You’re fucking kidding,” Kai muttered in a ragged breath before he called out, “Yes?”

“Is now a bad time, Alpha?”

Isla furrowed her brows. She’d been expecting Marin coming to sweep them away, but that deep voice belonged to Sol. She and Kai met each other’s eyes, the same question of the delta’s presence bearing on them. After last night, Kai instructed him to brief another set of scouts to send out into rogue territory. They’d decide whether to send them out in a couple of days.

Still, Kai asked, “Is it important?”

“I’m here with Imperial Beta Malakai.”

“Hey.”

“And the future luna’s brother.”

Kai released his grip on her hair, and Isla’s body went cold and hot with mortification all at once.

Intrusion aside, her father wasn’t supposed to arrive until tomorrow afternoon, having a conflicting duty in Io. But no, he was here, and she was kneeling before her mate, moments away from…

“You’re cute when you’re flustered.”

Isla whipped around to face Kai, who brandished a slightly smug smile. She whispered sharply, her eyes dropping to his crotch, “You might want to hide that while you’re talking to them.”

“Believe it or not, they’re a bit of a mood killer.”

“Big, scary alpha afraid of my dad and older brother?”

“I can take Sebastian, but your dad is yourdad, and I’m nowhere near good enough for you. Fated or not.”

Such a good answer.
