He grinned, getting excited. “Okay. That settles it. That’s the one we’re watching tonight. I can’t wait to see your reaction.”

“Perfect. See you later.”

Remi left and he dug through his closet to find something to wear to his fake dinner date. Suddenly it didn’t seem like it was going to be too terrible. He had something to look forward to afterward. He and Remi loved to talk about movie plots and how the writers twisted things, or how well the actors performed. It dawned on him that it was his chats with Remi that had gotten him interested in acting in the first place. Acting…and…

He unzipped the large pouch on his suitcase and pulled out the screenplay he’d written. It wasn’t his first screenplay, but it was the first one he felt had promise. He’d kept this part of himself a secret. His father wouldn’t be happy to know he was spending so much time on something like this. But he needed to tell him at some point. He really wanted to take a shot at selling this latest one.

A sinking feeling crept into his chest as he stared at the papers. He knew what his father would say, and it wasn’t good, so he shoved the screenplay back inside the flap and zipped it shut. If he ever got the courage to tell his father, he was sure it would result in a fight. His gut clenched and he pulled out a pair of slacks from his suitcase. He didn’t want to think about it anymore.

He dressed and walked to the room next door to get Liz. She opened the door and he nodded at her. “You look nice.”

“Thanks.” She lowered her gaze. “How long do you think this dinner will take tonight? I have someone I need to call. But I don’t want your father to get upset about it.”

“Then let’s not tell him.” Colton winked at her and she gave him a grateful smile. They headed toward the main resort building.

“I’m all for a quick dinner,” he said. “In fact, we could just order appetizers and call it a night.” That would be just fine with him.

“What about your father?” Liz bit her lower lip.

“I’ll take care of him,” Colton said with a lot more confidence than he felt.

They entered the lobby, and his father approached them. “Liz, you look perfect. Colton, why aren’t you wearing a suit?”

He looked down at his slacks and button up shirt. Why did his father always do that to him? “I’m fine, Dad. I’m not proposing or anything.”

His father blinked at him, then slowly nodded. “That’s not a bad idea.”

Colton took in a sharp breath and choked on his spit. “What?”

“You. Proposing. Maybe that could happen on Friday. You know, heighten the celebrity gossip.” He glanced at Liz and all the color drained from her face.

Heat rushed to his ears. “Absolutely not.”

“Why not? You want this to work, right? You do know why we’re doing this. I’m trying to get you another good role. The scripts that have been coming your way are all garbage. If this film doesn’t do well, we’re not going to get any better offers.” His father narrowed his eyes at him. “You do know I have your best interests in all this.”

“I’m not going to propose,” he said, his voice low so no one could overhear. “That’s pushing it too far.”

His father sighed and rubbed his temples. “Colton.”

“No. You’re not going to strong arm me this time.”

“Let’s talk about it later.” His father glanced at the people around them, who were now taking interest in their conversation.

“Fine. It’s time for me to take mygirlfriendout to dinner, anyway.” He slid his arm around Liz. “You’re not coming, are you? What kind of a date would that be?”

His father worked his jaw. “I wasn’t planning on going on your date with you.”

“Perfect. We’ll see you tomorrow.” Colton opened the door for Liz and left his father standing in the lobby. Cameras clicked as he walked out of the resort with Liz, and paparazzi shoved microphones in his face.

“How serious is your relationship with Liz?”

“How long have you been dating?”

“Is there any truth to the rumor that you two are living together?”

Colton jerked his head at that one. Was that a rumor his father started? “No comment,” he said rather pointedly. He didn’t mean to get flustered, but he couldn’t help it. His father was taking this way too far. And now he wanted him to get engaged to Liz. It boiled inside him. They were supposed to end this farce on Saturday. Had his father forgotten? Or was this his way of pushing things longer?

The paparazzi followed them to the restaurant where he let them take more photos before they entered. They were seated by a massive window, which he was sure his father had arranged. That way they could get lots ofcandidphotos of them eating together.
