“Goodnight, Liz.”

She gave him a smile. “Thanks, Colton. For everything.”

He waved then crossed to his door and disappeared into his room before he took out his phone and texted Remi.

I’m done with my plans. Ready to come get your pants scared off?

She texted right back.

Don’t be a perv.

He laughed and sent another quick text.

Come on over with your sister.

He grabbed the remote and ordered the movie. Tonight was going to be awesome. He would make sure he was the first one to sit down in the middle of the couch so Brooke had no choice but to sit next to him. It was the perfect plan.

CHAPTER7

Remi grabbed the pack of microwave popcorn she’d purchased at the convenience store up the street and nudged Brooke’s foot. “You coming?”

Brooke looked up from her phone and shot her a frown. “I’m not going, you dummy.”

Remi scoffed and kicked her sister again. “You told Colton you’d love to do something tonight. You sounded all excited.”

“Yes,” Brooke said like she was speaking to a child, “so he would make plans with you and I could back out at the last second, leaving you alone with him.”

“He told me to bring you when he texted.” She was trying not to be offended by this. Of course she was going to bring Brooke. That was the plan, anyway. But now she was backing out. How would that make her look? “I don’t want him to think I’m trying to do anything funny.”

Brooke raised her eyebrows. “Ah, I see. You think this is too obvious?”

“Right.”

“Okay. I’ll go with you, then about ten minutes in I’ll make up an excuse and leave. That way it will be less obvious.” She jumped up from the couch. “Then I’ll go down to the dance club on the corner. It looked like fun. Don’t wait up for me, I might be out late.”

Dance club? That was so Brooke. She’d go to a place she’d never been to hang out with people she didn’t know and find instant friends. If Remi tried to do that, she’d stand by the wall all night wondering why she was having a miserable time. “All right.”

Brooke grabbed her tiny purse and pulled the strap over her shoulder. Remi eyeballed it. “Does anything real fit in that? Or is it just for show? I’ve always wondered.”

“Sure. My credit cards are in it. And my room key. And my lipstick.”

“Oh. I’m glad. Because I wouldn’t want you to have a lipstick emergency.”

Brooke ignored her. “What are you going to do tonight to get Colton’s attention?”

Remi shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“What’s your plan?”

“To go watch a movie with him. And maybe play Final Fantasy after.” She’d already told Brooke that, so she was confused as to why she was asking.

“No, I mean what’s your plan for making him fall for you?” Brooke put her hands on her hips. “You do have a plan, right?”

No. She didn’t have a plan. She was a planless person. If she’d known aplancould get a guy to fall in love with you, then she would have had one a long time ago. She’d been in love with Colton since seventh grade. But no one had told her she needed one. “What kind of a plan?”

Brooke sighed. “Just laugh at everything he says. And brush your hair over your shoulder, like this.” She did a cute little hair-flip thing.

Remi tried to replicate the move, but her hair shot backwards and hit the desk lamp. Ooh, smooth one. She turned, but her hair snagged and caught on the lamp, knocking it over. It tugged hard on her hair and then whipped around and hung in front of her chest. She winced. “Ouch.”
