“Sheesh. I was just trying to get you to help me out. Don’t you want to help me?” He gave her a puppy-dog face.

Remi frowned but didn’t answer him.

“Remi?”

She sighed. “All right. I’ll ask her if she’s interested.”

“No,” he backpedaled. “Don’t ask her outright. My word. Just be subtle. Find out if I have a chance. That’s all I’m saying.”

When she didn’t say anything, he elbowed her. “Please?”

She looked like she’d rather go rob a bank than help him with Brooke, but she finally nodded. “Okay.”

“Thanks.” He pulled her to him and gave her a side hug. She was tense for a moment, but when he didn’t let go she snuggled into him and he pointed the remote at the television. “Now, I’m rewinding to the beginning because you’ve missed all kinds of small things and we can’t have that.”

She nodded and wiped at her face, and for a split second he wondered if she was crying, but that would be ridiculous. Why would she be crying? He didn’t say anything mean, and the movie hadn’t gotten to anything sad yet. She probably had something on her face, like an eyelash bothering her. It made no sense that she’d be crying.

* * *

Remi wiped at a tear, trying not to attract attention. This whole situation was a mess. Liz wasn’t his girlfriend, but that didn’t matter because he was hoping she would set him up with her sister. Of course Brooke would be the one he wanted. Everyone wanted Brooke, because she was tall and beautiful, and had actual boobs instead of middle school speed bumps. Remi felt like throwing up.

Colton’s fingers brushed against the skin of her arm and a thousand butterflies took flight inside her, which only made the tears want to fall even faster. Here she was, so close to Colton she could smell his amazing cologne mixed with his fabric softener, and all she could think about was how he would look with Brooke in his arms. He was gorgeous. She was gorgeous. They went together.

Another tear escaped and traveled down her cheek. She left it. He would notice if she was constantly wiping at her face. He would want to know why she was crying, and that was an embarrassment she could do without tonight.

She curled her legs up into herself and concentrated on the movie. There was nothing she could do about Colton liking Brooke. Might as well try to enjoy the film and see why he thought it was amazing. Luckily, it worked, and she quickly got sucked into the plot. And he was right. It was a good film. She was able to stop obsessing about Colton and Brooke because the movie was so well crafted.

Halfway through the movie Colton jumped off the couch, making her face-plant into the seat because she’d been leaning on him. She pushed herself up. “What is it?”

“We forgot the popcorn.”

“Oh.” She paused the movie. “I’ll make it.”

“No, you sit. I think I can handle making microwave popcorn.” He snickered. “Who do you think I am? Some useless rich guy?”

“Well, if the rich pants fit…” She gave him a cheesy grin.

He scoffed. “You’re so funny.”

As he unwrapped the package and fiddled with the microwave, Remi tried not to stare too much at his muscles. “Did you ever think you’d be a household name?” she asked to distract herself from them.

Colton shook his head. “No way. Do you know how incredibly hard it is to make it big in this business? And incredibly hard to stay on top. You’re either up-and-coming or you’re a has been.”

Something about the way he said it caught her attention. “A has been? Are you worried about becoming one of those?”

Colton shot her a frown. “It’s what my father is concerned about.”

“And what about you?”

The microwave beeped and he pulled out the bag, but it must have been too hot because he juggled with it a minute before he was able to catch it by one of the top corners. He jaunted back over to the couch and plopped down beside her. When she didn’t immediately snuggle back into his side, he put his arm around her and pulled her close, which warmed her to her toes, even though she knew he didn’t mean anything by it.

“I guess I’m worried about it, but not as much as my father. I mean, fame is fleeting. I know this. I don’t care if I don’t get any more leading roles. I just love stretching myself. I’ve been…” He paused, like he hadn’t meant to say it.

“You’ve been what?”

“Nothing.”

“No, tell me.”
