“It’s fine. It was just a bit awkward is all.”

“Understatement of the year.” He grabbed another pillow and put it behind his back.

“So…is tomorrow off, then?”

“No. My father was completely overreacting. I’ll do the photo shoot with Liz in the morning, then we’ll sneak off to the beach. The paparazzi won’t even know we’re there.” Even though he said the words, he didn’t quite believe them. Maybe it would be best not to be seen alone with Remi, in case anyone did catch a photo of them. He quickly tacked on, “Do you think Brooke would want to come?”

She paused for a few moments. “I’ll ask.”

“Great. Thanks.”

“So, is everything okay with your father?” Remi’s voice came through soft.

He exhaled and rolled his shoulders. “He got upset about the conversation I had with Mom. But he basically confirmed he’s not my father by telling me to not look into it.”

“Really? Do you think he might have just been upset about you asking?”

He’d gone over it in his head a million times. “No, Remi. I’m sure of it. They’re hiding something.”

“Okay. Then let’s find out what it is. I can hack into the hospital records for you.”

He grinned at the phone. There was a time when he might have believed her. “You so totally can’t.”

She laughed. “No, I can’t. But we can do some digging.”

“How?”

“I’d start with your father. Can we send him on an errand and search his room? We know someone sent him that note. Maybe he’s got an envelope hidden in there. We could at least find out where it was postmarked.”

As always, she was brilliant. “Good idea.”

“I’m full of them.”

“And so humble, too.” He chuckled, shifting on the bed. He was suddenly extremely tired.

“After we go spelunking, we’ll formulate a plan.”

“Okay.”

“Hey,” she said, sounding much more awake than he felt at the moment. “We need a secret name to call it. Like Operation Nativity.”

He made a face. “That sounds like a Christmas spy movie.”

“Okay, fine. It does. But someone should totally write that now because I want to see it. What about Operation Ancestry?”

“No good. That sounds like all we’re going to do is some genealogy.”

She huffed. “You think of a name, then, if you’re going to shoot down all of my ideas.”

“What about Operation Origin?”

“Okay, smarty-pants. That actually works well. Let’s officially call it that. We’ll work on Operation Origin tomorrow. Now, you go to bed because you sound like you’re half asleep.”

“Yeah, I am,” he said, stifling a yawn.

“Good night, Colton. Have sweet dreams.”

As he hung up the phone he couldn’t help but smile to himself. He was going to have fun with Remi tomorrow. Maybe he shouldn’t be thinking about her in the way he was, but right now he didn’t care. She was adorable, and he was looking forward to spending the day with Remi.
