“Faint? I’m going to throw up.”

He stepped back when he heard that last one, just in case he was within range. His driver stepped between them and put out his arms in a protective stance. “Girls, please. Let Mr. Drake get in his car.”

His father hadn’t wanted the expense of bringing his bodyguard to the island. He’d said it wasn’t necessary, so Colton had been relying on his father to shield him from the crowds. It had worked just fine, until he’d ditched him to spend time with Remi. Now he was reconsidering his choices.

Remi finally climbed into the car and he slid in next to her. The driver closed his door and the sound of the shouting teens diminished. Remi stared out of the tinted windows at the mob. “Holy cow. Is that what it’s like for you?”

“Not all the time.” Sometimes he wasn’t recognized. He wondered what gave it away today.

“And they won’t follow us to the beach?” Remi asked, her eyes wide.

Yeah. That was exactly what they would do. He leaned forward once the driver was inside the car. “Can you take us back to the resort? We can’t take this car to the beach.”

“Absolutely.”

“I’m sorry.” He turned to Remi. “We’ll have to wait until they get bored, then call a cab or something.”

She shrugged. “That’s fine. It’s still early.”

Colton stared at her. “You’re not upset?”

“No. I understand.”

His driver began to inch forward, and the teenagers parted so they wouldn’t get run over. Colton grabbed Remi’s hand without thinking. “Are you sure?” He’d dated a lot of girls. None of them would have been okay with their date getting interrupted by a mob of fans. Of course, this wasn’t exactly a date. At least, not to Remi.

“It’s fine,” she said, lightly shoving his knee. “You’re famous. This comes with the territory. It’s no big deal.”

He wanted to lean over and kiss her, but obviously he couldn’t, so he gave her a side hug instead. “You’re the best.”

She batted her eyes at him in an exaggerated way. “Aw, shucks. You love me.”

His heart skipped a beat as her words sent a jolt through him. He wasn’t sure if he was falling in love with Remi or not, but he certainly wanted to explore these newfound feelings he was having. Remi was something special. That was why he’d become friends with her. But now, that friendship didn’t feel like enough.

But what would he do if he confessed his feelings to her and she rejected him? Or worse, what if it ruined their friendship? She did say she was in love with another man. What if he was falling for her too late?

He sat back in his seat, a feeling of unease settling in his stomach. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do, but he didn’t want to let things go the way they had before with time and distance allowing them to drift apart.

No matter what, he needed Remi in his life.

CHAPTER17

Remi tugged at her suit as she turned again, looking at herself in the mirror. The only place she could find to change was a bathroom in the restaurant on the beach. The smell of seafood made her mouth water as she tried to figure out how to make the small suit cover more than it did.

“Are you coming?” Colton called through the doorway.

“Yes,” she said, finally giving up. Everyone else was wearing swimsuits on the beach. Why did it bother her so much? She needed to get over it. After they explored the water cave she could get back into her sweats and T-shirt.

She picked up the beach bag Colton had insisted she needed and shoved her clothes in it. Then she pulled the towel around her, slipped into the flip flops she’d picked out, and hurried out of the bathroom.

Colton leaned against the wall of the restaurant waiting for her. “What took you so long? Did the suit not fit?” His gaze traveled over her. If he thought she looked funny in her suit he masked it well.

“It’s fine. Let’s just get in the water. I want to see the cave. And if it’s super lame I can chew you out for making me buy this suit for nothing.”

He grinned at her and his eyes lit up with mirth. It made him look extra sexy. “It’s not lame. You’ll love it.”

He slipped his hand over hers and gently tugged, leading her out of the restaurant toward the water. As they walked, he threaded his fingers through hers. It made her insides flutter. If he knew what he was doing to her, he’d probably be mortified, so she bit the inside of her cheek and didn’t say anything.

The beach was littered with people, but not as crowded as the resort beach had been. It was a good thing they’d waited at the resort until the teenagers had left. She could just imagine what they would do if they cornered him here. “Is this a private beach?”
