“Because what?” she asked once she was sure they wouldn’t be interrupted.

He swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing. His gaze dipped, and an expression she’d never seen on him before came over his features. “Because…”

“What’s this?” someone asked right behind Remi.

Oh, no. They were about to be discovered. Colton’s eyes widened, and he leaned closer to her. “Do me a favor. Please?” he whispered.

“What?” she whispered back.

“Just go with it.”

Before she could ask what he meant, his lips enveloped hers. Warmth spread over her like a summer afternoon, filling all the cracks and crevices of her heart. Remi had imagined what kissing Colton would be like for years, but the actual experience dwarfed anything her mind had come up with. His lips were a thousand times softer, his touch a million times more thrilling than she’d dreamed. His fingers slid up her arms, leaving a trail of fire igniting in their wake. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. Her heart hammered so fast she thought it might burst.

Remi closed her eyes, her senses taking in too much as his lips slid over hers. Tingles erupted over her skin. She couldn’t think. Couldn’t breathe. All she could do was stand there and melt into Colton’s arms. He was kissing her, and all she wanted to do was freeze time so she never had to leave this moment.

A scream ripped through the cave and Remi jerked back from Colton.

“It’s Colton Drake!” a girl yelled.

CHAPTER18

Colton squinted against the bright light of someone’s cell phone, his hand automatically going up to shield his face from the camera. He was breathless—not from the interruption, but from the kiss. He’d actually done it. He’d kissed Remi. And it had been amazing. He silently cursed whoever had interrupted him.

“Colton Drake is back here making out with someone,” one of the young girls shouted. “And it’s not Liz Adams!”

Panic gripped his chest as he was brought back to reality. This could not happen. He couldn’t be caught on camera with Remi. Not after all the scolding he’d had from his father. If this leaked out, his father would murder him. How had they recognized him? He was hoping by kissing Remi she’d block anyone’s view, and they would just leave. That would have been the polite thing to do if you found a couple kissing. What was up with kids these days? Colton ducked out of the small cavern room, his hands in front of his face. Remi followed him.

“It’s not what you think,” he said quickly. Maybe he could convince them it was innocent. The way their eyes glared at him gave him doubts.

The tallest girl of the bunch stepped forward. “Where’s Liz? I thought you were dating.”

“We are.” He had to salvage this situation. He’d seen other actors blackballed for less. He couldn’t let the press get wind of this. Everyone would think he was cheating on Liz. He would look like such a creep.

The girl’s eyes narrowed, her phone still trained on him. “Then who is this?”

He had to be careful how he responded. Was she filming him right now? Everything he said could be broadcasting to social media. Sweat beaded on his forehead and he swallowed, his mouth dry. “This is just a friend.”

“You were kissing!”

Colton balked. If they had caught the kiss on camera, he couldn’t deny it. He would look like an idiot. A lying, cheating, horrible miscreant. His acting career would be ruined. His father would go ballistic. He had to think of something, and fast.

“We were rehearsing,” he blurted out, his voice squeaking like he was still going through puberty. Great. That had to look awesome. He pointed to her phone. “Are you filming me? Is this going on social media?”

“What? No.” The girl stepped back. “I don’t have any bars here.”

Relief poured over him. Maybe he wasn’t being broadcasted all over the internet right now. Still, if she did have him on camera, he needed to be careful. She could upload it later. Maybe he could convince her that wasn’t a good idea. “There are laws against putting up footage of people on the internet without their permission, you know.”

The girl lowered her phone. “I wasn’t filming. This is just my flashlight.”

His pulse drummed loud in his ears. Just her flashlight? Maybe he was okay, then. “Good. Because I don’t want you to get into trouble. I’ve seen people sued for less.” He cringed at how that sounded. He hadn’t meant for it to come out like a threat, but it hung in the air anyway, thick and heavy.

“My camera isn’t on,” she insisted, but the color drained from her face.

The girls all stared at him like he was a monster. He needed to salvage the situation. He ran a hand through his hair and put on his best camera smile. “Let’s take some selfies together. You can upload those, okay?”

That brought smiles to their faces. “Really?” the tall one said.

“Yeah. Let’s go into the sunlight and snap some shots. Then you can brag to all your friends about meeting me.”
