His anger cooled. His father was not the most diplomatic man, but he knew he loved him. He knew he’d done his best raising another man’s child as his own. Taking in a deep breath to calm himself, he looked his father in the eye. He had to do this, or he would forever be under his father’s thumb.

With careful control, he took his father’s shoulders. “Dad, you’re fired.”

His father blinked. “What did you say?”

“I love you. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. But I need a new manager. I’m firing you.”

“Colton—”

“Wait. Before you say anything, I want you to think about it. Our relationship has been strained these past few years. You’ve worked so hard for me, and I appreciate that, but now it’s time for me to take control of my own life. I need a father now, not a manager.” His gaze traveled to the jacket that had held the threatening notes.

“No.”

“Please, take some time to think,” Colton said.

His father swallowed. “I don’t need time. I know what’s best for you.”

Colton shook his head. “I’m sorry. Not this time, Dad.”

Pink colored his father’s face. “Is this about that woman?”

“No.” He knew it was much more than that.

His father clenched his fists. “Don’t do this.”

For a split second, he wondered if he was making a mistake. Maybe he should just pacify his father. Maybe his father needed this. A sinking feeling spread through his gut. No. He had to stop things from getting any worse. “I have to,” he said.

His father pressed his lips into a tight line, turned his back and stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him.

Colton let out a breath. Well, that could have gone worse.

CHAPTER20

Remi paced the resort room, chewing on her thumbnail. It had been thirty minutes since she’d left Colton and his father. Thirty whole minutes. What had happened in that time? Were they still talking? Was everything all right?

She rummaged through her suitcase and pulled out a black hoodie, slipping it over her head. She’d changed into her comfy sweatpants and a comfy T-shirt, but for some reason she was still cold. It was probably her nerves.

Her phone rang and she quickly swiped to answer. “Hello?”

“Can I come over?” Colton’s voice never sounded so good to her.

“Yes.” Thank goodness he was only a few doors down. When he knocked, she about tore the door off the hinges. “Come in.”

Colton let out a breath as he walked in. He tugged at his polo shirt. She tried not to stare, as he looked fantastic. He raked a hand over the back of his neck. “He told me everything.”

“Really? What did he say?”

Colton related the entire story to her.

She stared at him, unable to believe it all. “Your parents forged a birth certificate? Isn’t that like a felony?”

“Probably.”

“And your biological father…?”

“No one knows who he is.”

Remi plopped down on her bed letting out a breath. This was all too much to handle. “That’s so crazy.”
