Yes. I can come to the hospital before I go to the airport.

Great. See you tomorrow.

Remi slid her phone onto the nightstand. “What do you think he wants to say?”

“I think that’s obvious.” Brooke pulled her suitcase out of the closet and unzipped it.

“Obvious?”

“Oh, honey. He likes you.”

“You really think so?”

Brooke gave her a sad smile. “At least one of us found love here at the Billionaire Club.”

Remi crossed the room and pulled Brooke into a hug. “I’m sorry you and Mark didn’t work out.”

Brooke sniffed. “Me, too. I really liked him.”

CHAPTER26

Colton splashed cold water on his face. After staying up until three in the morning waiting for his father to come out of surgery, he finally dozed a little in the hospital chair, but now he had to wake up and meet Remi before she left the island.

His father was going to be fine, he just needed to rest for a while. Thank goodness. Colton breathed out his relief. It was funny, he spent all this time trying to find out the truth about who his father was, but in the end, he came to realize his father was with him this whole time. His true father.

Colton’s phone went off and he checked his screen. Remi had texted.

I’m in the lobby.

This was it. He grabbed a paper towel to dry his face. He ran a hand through his hair before heading down.

He had no idea what he was going to say to Remi. His mind had been going over the past few days, playing them on repeat. If Remi was in love with him, she didn’t know how to show it. Which wasn’t impossible to believe. She was adorable but a bit socially blind.

Still, there was a possibility that he could ruin their friendship by confessing his feelings, and he didn’t want to do that. In fact, it terrified him. He continued to waffle back and forth on whether he should tell her he was developing feelings or let things play out. The elevator doors opened, and he walked out.

Remi sat in the far corner of the lobby near a potted plant. She smiled when she saw him, but it seemed forced. “Hey,” she said. “How’s your father?”

“He’s going to be fine.” He sat next to her. “The surgery went well.”

“And your mom?”

“She’ll be here in the afternoon.”

Remi nodded. “What’s going to happen with your biological father?”

Colton sat forward in his chair. “He’s going to go back to jail. I guess he’s been in jail for the last fifteen years. Just got released two months ago.”

“Really?” Remi’s eyes widened. “How did he find out about you?”

“He told the cops he knew my aunt was pregnant when they broke up. When he was in jail he saw me on TV and thought there was an uncanny resemblance. That’s when he started digging into things and figured out what had happened.”

“Wow.” Remi gripped her arm rests. “He could have gone after you.”

Colton exhaled. “I know.”

She stared down at her shoes. A pair of gray crocs. “I don’t know what I would have done if it had been you that got stabbed.”

Before he could respond, the lobby doors opened, and a steady stream of basketball players entered. In just moments the entire lobby was full of noise and bustle.
