Linc pulled her into his arms and pressed their mouths together. When she responded enthusiastically, he leveled up and ensured the kiss got a little dirty. “It’s you, Lucy.” He bit her bottom lip. “You’re the one.”

“So happy to hear that.” She stroked his cheek. “I’m not completely ready for where this might be headed, but I will do my best not to let the past dictate our future.”

“Can’t ask for more than that.” He hugged her tightly and loved the minute she melted into his embrace. “Thank you for welcoming my old friend.”

“Of course.”

He watched her step back and check the little clock on the desk. “Do you have an appointment?”

“No. I just need to text the girls and invite them for a little get-together tomorrow night.”

“Sounds like you’re about to hatch a plan.”

“Might be.”

“Anything you want to tell me about?”

“Not yet.” She patted his chest. “But I will keep you on speed dial if bail money is required.”

“And exactly how often have you needed bail money in the past?”

Lucy tilted her head. “Is it wise to ask questions you don’t want the answers to?”

“Yes, as a matter of fact, it is because operating without intel sucks.”

“I will provide details as it becomes necessary.”

He tugged her hand. “What if our opinions differ on the definition of necessary?”

“Then we defer to mine.”

“That’s what I was afraid of,” he said with a frown.

“Don’t worry, I have lots of experience. Very little goes wrong, is life-threatening, traceable, or requires residency in a country without an extradition treaty.”

He knew she was playing things up and shook his head. “It seems the only thing I can do is ride standby and be ready to run back up.”

“Yes, that would be lovely.” She ran her hand under his T-shirt. “I think you running backup would be just perfect.”

“We’re not talking about whatever your nefarious plans are anymore, are we?”

Lucy pointed to the book display that featured Dee’s pride and joy. “We can’t let the vegetables have all the fun, can we?”

“Absolutely not.”

“I’m going to close the store early.”

“Damn fine idea.” He watched her saunter to the front door and couldn’t wait to get her upstairs and show her how qualified he was for the job.

FIFTEEN

Lucy knew that patience was the key to a happy life. Or one that didn’t require a short stint in jail because you accidentally, on purpose, ensured that a certain someone slipped on a shiny waxed floor.

On second thought, perhaps a brief visit to the county jail wouldn’t be the end of the world. Giving only five percent of her attention to the long-winded speech Felicia Kilburn was insisting she listen to, she tried not to stare at the woman’s newly lifted face. She was all for free choice and encouraging women to do whatever made them feel better, but good Lord, was there anything sadder than a face pulled tighter than a trampoline?

Sneaking a peek at her watch, she decided that another two minutes of this horrible diatribe wouldn’t kill her.

However, it might force her to move up the cocktail hour.
