“I have a little surprise.”

Looking around, she couldn’t make sense of his words. “At Mr. Finch’s house?”

“It will be mine in another week.”

She pressed the books to her chest, hoping the loud buzzing in her head would soon disappear. “Was I brought here on false pretenses?”

“Yes,” he replied with a laugh. “It seems that I’ve fallen in love with you.”

Holding her breath, she waited for thebut. Surely this man hadn’t just confessed his feelings. When it didn’t come, she took his outstretched hand.

“No matter what. I love you, Lucy. Now and forever.”

“Really?” He pulled her against his chest, and the books fell from her hands. “I was going to be the one to orchestrate a reconciliation.”

“Did I mess with your plans?”

“A little.” She let the tension she’d been carrying around for two weeks slip off her shoulders. Winding her hands around his waist, she dropped her head against his chest. “I want you to know that it’s taken everything in me not to call you. I wanted to run to you and almost did a dozen times.”

“I guess that means you’re down for giving this thing another shot.”

She tipped her head back and studied the uncertainty in the harsh lines of his features. “I would like another shot very much.”

His hold tightened, and she raised herself on her tiptoes and kissed his mouth. “It’s a little harder without heels.”

“Do you mean it, Lucy?” He tightened his hold. “Are you in?”

“Yes!” She dug her fingers into his side. “I want to discover all of your annoying habits and charming proclivities. Let’s see if we can mesh our two very different worlds and come up with something new and wonderful.”

“I like meshing.”

She traced his jaw and noticed that his eyes looked suspiciously glassy. “It’s you, Linc. You’re the one that I want to take a chance on.”

“Damn good news, woman, because I ride hard for who I love.”

He crashed their mouth together, and she knew it wouldn’t be easy between them, but it would be exciting. “I doubt there will ever be a moment when you don’t leave me breathless.”

“That’s kind of the plan, sweetheart.” He took a reluctant step back. “Are you ready for your grand gesture?”

“Wait, I wanted to be the one to gesture grandly.”

“You can. Right after I show you what I made.”

“I feel a little upstaged.”

“We both know that’s impossible.” He tipped her chin with his thumb. “I’m not going to make a promise about some kind of bullshit happily ever after. But I promise to spend every day making sure you know what matters.”

“And what’s that?”

Linc held up their entwined hands. “You and me, facing this beautiful life head-on.”

“I like the sound of that.”

“Thought you might.” He tugged her toward the side of the house. “Let me show you how I see us spending our evenings together.”

“Oohhh, that sounds interesting.” She looked around the mature garden and admired the trees and flowering plants. “But I must tell you that the woman who considers herself the Supreme Allied Commander of the Morality Squad lives just two houses down, so if you plan on anything super naughty, we should probably do it in the house.” She gave him a small smile. “She already thinks I’m debauched beyond redemption, and I don’t need to add fuel to her fire.”

“Noted, sweetheart. No screaming orgasms in the yard.”
