I swiped at my cheeks as I heard voices out in the hall. Time to put on my game face and give the class my best. I’ll have to think about everything Anjannette said later.

Simon

I walkedinto the house and headed toward the stairs to go straight to my room. It’s been a long day and I’m too tired to put on a happy front for my family.

“Simon? Is that you?” my mom yelled.

So close.

“Yeah.”

I reversed direction and walked into the kitchen where I found her sitting at the island writing on the notepad in front of her. She looked up at me and frowned.

“Is everything okay?”

I nodded and set my backpack on the floor.

“I’m just tired.”

She didn’t seem convinced, but didn’t push either.

“Do you know what you and Keera are doing for the holidays?”

I haven’t told anyone that Keera and I are taking abreak. At first I didn’t expect it to last this long and now I just don’t want to talk about it.

“No, I don’t.”

“We can work around her family if you’re going to both houses like you did at Thanksgiving. I just need to know so I can plan a time.”

“Just plan it whenever and we’ll make it work.”

She carefully placed her pen next to her notebook then folded her hands and rested them under her chin.

“What’s going on Simon?”

Her tone of voice made me feel like a guilty adolescent.

“Nothing.”

“I know when something is bothering my children. And there’s definitely something going on with you the past week. So spill.”

I really don’t want to talk about this, but I know she won’t quit so I might as well get it over with.

“Keera and I are taking a break.”

She blinked then raised her eyebrows.

“I thought everything was going well with the two of you.”

“Me too,” I said then added, “but she’s working through some things.”

“And you can’t do that together?”

I shrugged.

“Apparently not.”

“I saw Zoe at the concert. Did something happen with her?”
