The memory card is still in the console so I flipped through our saved games and clicked, bringing Madden graphics to life on the screen. Soon the room was filled with the sound of the video game interspersed with controller clicks and smack talk.

Either her muscle memory is exceptional or Shannon has played recently because she’s as good as she was as a teen. Insults roll right off her back so I decided to play dirty.

“Would you really hate it if mom and dad sold the house?”

Her slight hesitation gave me the opening I needed to score another touchdown. With the way she’s playing, I need to get a good lead early.

“You suck,” she said as we lined our teams up again. “But to answer your question, yes it would bother me.”

“Why?”

“What do you meanwhy?”

“You technically haven’t lived here since high school.”

“I know, but I love this house. I can’t imagine not coming home for holidays or to visit.”

“I can’t argue with that.” I groaned as Shannon took out my quarterback with a perfect blitz, then added, “In case you’re worried, they haven’t mentioned selling the house. That was just something I threw out there.”

“Good to know.”

I haven’t played this particular game in a while either so I really had to concentrate to keep my lead. Sports aren’t my thing, but they are my dad’s. He played Division 1 football, but it was pretty obvious after playing one season of youth football that it just wasn’t for me. When I got my first Playstation, there were sports games wrapped up along with my preferred sci-fi titles. Through the years, my dad and I spent hours playing together. He taught me sports lingo and strategy and I showed him the ins and outs of gaming. Perfect quality time for a jock dad and his nerdy son.

“Keera seems nice.”

My hands jerked and I messed up the play I was trying to execute. I glanced at Shannon out of the corner of my eye as our players settled at the line of scrimmage. Guess I’m not the only one playing dirty.

“Yeah, she’s great.”

“She’s really pretty too.”

“MmmHmm.”

“The models I know would love to have her hair. It’s so thick,” she said. “And her eyes are gorgeous. Would you say they’re more ocean or sapphire?”

A mental picture of Keera popped into my mind.

Caribbean blue.

My family took a vacation to Barbados when I was thirteen and I never forgot the color of the ocean there. It’s the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. Until Keera. Her eyes are the same amazing shade.

But I’m not sharing that with Shannon.

“No idea.”

“I kind of wish we stayed to see her routine. That would have been fun.”

I’m not surefunis the word I’d use.

Watching Keera’s lush curves moving to the beat of whatever sexy song was playing would have been more like torture.

“Yes!”

That single word brought my full attention back to the game. Shannon scored another touchdown to tie the score.

“I can’t believe you hustled me.”

“How did I hustle you?” she asked around a chuckle.
