I shrugged.

“I guess so.”

“And I’ve known you for how long and never met them?”

“They don’t frequent Party on the Patio like your family does.”

We used to go to the free weekly concerts at the Mohegan Sun Casino in the summer with a gang from work. Keera’s parents were often there so I’ve met them a few times.

“That’s because your family is off doing exotic things,” she said. “Like this extended road trip your parents are on now. That’s so cool.”

“It’s something my dad has always wanted to do.”

“Are they enjoying themselves?”

“So far, which I’ll admit is surprising. I thought my mom would be begging to come home after a month, but it’s been almost three and she still seems happy.”

“When will they be back?”

“They’re coming home for a month over Thanksgiving and Christmas then heading out again for another six months. So they’ll be gone for twelve months total.”

“And you’re staying at their house?”

“Yeah, it got me out of that crappy studio for now. I’ll start looking for a place after the new year,” I said. “What about you?”

“What about me?”

“You’re living with Granny Vi?”

“For now. After my grandfather died, she didn’t like living alone. Not that she’d admit that to anyone, but it was pretty obvious she wasn’t happy.” She took a sip of water. “So when I left Brian, I asked if I could stay with her until I found a place.”

“And it’s working out okay?”

“It is. Even though she can drive me crazy, she’s literally my favorite person in the world. And I like being there just in case she needs me, you know? I mean, for the most part, she’s in good health, but like she always likes to tell me, she’s not getting any younger.”

The waitress came over to clear the now-empty dishes.

“Are you interested in dessert?” she asked.

“Oh um...”

Keera looked at me, seeming unsure. I know she has a huge sweet tooth, so that surprised the hell out of me. I figured she’d already know what she wants, considering she’s been eyeing the desserts being carried through the restaurant. I’m feeling full after our meal, but not so stuffed that dessert is out of the question.

“What do you have?” I asked.

She recited a list, but two caught my attention.” I looked at Keera. “I can’t decide between the cannoli and limoncello cake. Want to share?”

“Oh…” She licked her lips then shook her head. “I shouldn’t.”

Through the years, I’ve heard Keera complain about her weight. I’ve also watched her try every fad diet and I just don’t get it. The woman has curves in all the right places and I have no idea why she’d want to change that.

“That doesn’t mean youcan’t.”

Keera blinked and chuckled at my raised brow, then turned her attention to the waitress.

“We’ll share the cannoli and limoncello cake.”
