“Yep.”

“So how did the two of you end up together?”

I shifted to sit back against the armrest and crossed my legs.

“He came to the open house at the studio and asked me out.”

“Well, I’m glad you agreed to go out with him.”

“Why?”

“He’s not your usual type, which is a good thing.”

Any response I make to that would be snarky, so I didn’t comment. Not deterred by

my silence, she continued.

“You should bring him to your dad’s show.”

My dad has been in a band since the 80’s. Despite being named Afternoon Delight, they’re actually pretty good and have superfans who go to see them whenever they play.

“Isn’t that Thanksgiving weekend?”She nodded. “Mom, that’s almost a month away.

Simon and I just had our second date, I can’t ask him to do something that far off.”

“Why not?”

“I just can’t. Not right now anyway,” I said. “Maybe closer to the date if we’re still hanging out.”

“The terms you kids have. Hanging out sounds like you’re loitering on the corner,” Granny Vi said. “And worse istalking. Cora’s granddaughter insisted she was justtalkingto a boy and ended up pregnant.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “Hmmph, seems like they were doing more than talking.”

“We’re justdating.”

I looked at Granny Vi when I said that last word and gave her an is-that-better look? She nodded in response.

“Well, whatever you’re doing, I’m glad. From what I remember, he seemed really sweet,” my mom said.

“Yeah, he is.”

“Don’t sound so happy about it.”

I shrugged. My mom moved over and held her arms out. Taking her invitation, I shifted into her embrace and rested my head against her shoulder.

“What’s wrong, honey?”

I let out a long sigh.

“Simonisreally sweet. What if I screw this up and he ends up hating me?”

“Why would that happen?”

I sat up to look her in the eye.

“You know my history with men.”

“I do.”

“So it should be obvious.”
