“I told her she was crazy.” I shook my head. “I’m so glad I didn’t know because it probably would have changed our friendship, especially when I was with Brian.”

“That’s exactly why I didn’t say anything.”

“So what made you ask me out?”

He took my hand in his and laced our fingers together.

“Indirectly it was Shannon.”

“What did she do?”

“She kept setting me up with her friends. When I told her I didn’t want to go on any more blind dates, she reminded me that I like to be in a relationship and I just needed to meet the right girl. I realized that I met the right girl, I just never asked her out.”

“Me?”

“You.”

“Oh wow.”

I thought about all the times Simon and I spent together in the past. Even with hindsight, I don’t see any glaring signs that he was into me.

“Is it really freaking you out?”

“Not really.” He raised his brows. “It’s not freaking me out, it’s just making me question a few things.”

“Like?”

“How would I have acted if I found out? What would I have said if you did ask me out? But mostly I’m wondering why I wasted my time with losers when you were right in front of me.”

Simon wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me closer until our noses practically touched.

“I don’t want to waste time with what-ifs or could’ve-beens. I’m just happy that I finally asked you out, you said yes, and we’re building on that.”

I know I can’t go back and change things, but I can’t help wondering where Simon and I would be if we got together back when we first met. If that had happened, I would have been saved a lot of aggravation and heartache for sure.

But maybe I needed to go through all that to become the person I am today so I could truly appreciate this. To truly appreciate him.

He gave me a soft kiss then pulled back to meet my gaze. As I got lost in his green depths, a warmth settled in my stomach, and a feeling I’m not ready to name made my heart flutter.

Shifting onto his back, Simon wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me close until my cheek rested on his chest again. I closed my eyes and thanked the universe we finally got our timing right.

Simon

“Dinner is late,” Archer said. “It was supposed to be delivered seven minutes ago.”

“Are you that hungry?” I asked.

“No, but they said it would be here by seven-thirty.”

When the doorbell rang, I ran to it. If Archer answered, he’d lecture the poor delivery person about being late. It’s happened before.

Andrew came downstairs freshly showered as I carried the Thai food into the kitchen.

“Oh good, the food is here. I’m starving.”

Gaming is at his house tonight and since he had an emergency surgery, we’re getting a late start. We settled around the table and dug into dinner.

“I know it’s a while off, but are we doing a marathon Thanksgiving weekend?” Andrew
