“Sorry about that,” I said at the same time and instinctively reached out to steady her.

Jill stopped at the entrance to the ladies’ room with the door open and Zoe waved at her to go inside.

“I’m glad I bumped into you,” she said, then chuckled and added. “Literally.” Leaning closer, she continued. “After listening to you talk about Keera for years, I’m glad I finally got to know her. She’s really amazing and you two are adorable together.”

I had no idea what to say to that so I just nodded.

“You look happy,” she said.

“I am.”

“Good. You’re a great guy, you deserve to be.”

“Thanks.”

I have no idea what Zoe’s love life looks like these days and it’s really none of my business. Before things turned awkward, Jill stepped out of the bathroom.

“I’m heading to the bar. Do either of you want anything?”

“Oh thanks, you’re saving me a trip,” Zoe said. “I’d love a white wine.”

“Same,” Jill said when I looked at her.

“Two white wines coming up,” I said then walked over to the bar.

I got the drinks then chuckled to myself as I made my way toward the front holding two wine glasses in one hand and my soda in the other. I’ve never been a waiter, but might just have a knack for it.

As I reached my group, I held out my hand so Jill and Zoe could take their drinks. Making my way next to Keera, I asked if she wanted a sip of my soda. She looked at me out of the corner of her eye and shook her head.

The band played three more songs before finishing with what Gus called theirfavorite one-hit wonder and namesake, “Afternoon Delight” by the Starland Vocal Band.

When I jokingly suggested that be our song, Keera rolled her eyes and shook her head.

After the band finished, the crowd thinned a little bit. Keera’s “pole peeps” left when the music stopped, deciding to hit a nightclub a few blocks away. We opted to stay and hang out with our parents instead.

Before sitting at the table, Keera and Anjannette headed to the ladies’ room. I sat next to Archer who was talking to my mom. Andrew was across from me.

“What do you know about Zoe’s friend Sacha?”

He rested his elbow on the table and leaned in as he spoke.

“Not a lot. They work together. I’ve been in her company a few times and she seems nice.” I shrugged. “Why? You interested?”

“Maybe. I don’t know. We were talking and I got her number.” He finished his beer in one long chug. “I was just wondering if you had any inside intel.”

“Nope. Sorry.”

Archer had shifted to follow our conversation.

“You know, when I saw Zoe here tonight, I thought it was going to be bad,” he said. “But she didn’t get on my nerves like she used to and Keera didn’t seem bothered.”

“There’s no reason she should be bothered,” I said, glancing at Keera’s parents to see if they were listening.

Archer snorted.

“I don’t claim to know women, but common sense tells me that’s flawed thinking on your part.”
