“All the rooms are restocked and sterilized.” she said. “Need anything else before I head out?”

“I don’t think so.” I walked across the waiting room. “Thanks for your help today. I know I was running slow and you kept things moving along.”

“You did great, considering you were out partying until dawn.” I raised my brow. “At least that’s what I heard when I was getting my coffee this morning.”

“It must be a slow news day if Eve’s bachelorette party is being discussed at Seaside Brew.”

“That’s life in a small town.” She leaned down and grabbed her purse from the drawer. “Go home and take a nap. You’ve earned it.”

“Thea has been asleep on the couch in my office most of the day, so I doubt a nap is in my near future. She’ll be full of energy and ready to play.”

“Well whatever you do, have fun.” She smiled. “I’ll see you Monday.”

“See you Monday.”

Ginny had made it a point to keep me hydrated all day, so I needed to hit the bathroom before heading out.

“Ok girl, it’s time to go,” I said as I walked into my office drying my hands. “Aahhh!”

I threw the paper towel in the air as I jumped back when I saw a man on the couch petting Thea.

“Sorry,” Dr. Madden said. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”

Placing my hand over my chest, I caught my breath.

“No, it’s fine,” I said, thankful I’d closed the bathroom door. “I thought I was alone.”

“I stopped in to get my computer bag. I just got here this morning when Jack Doyle called and in my haste to leave I forgot it.”

“How are the horses?”

“They’re fine and each has a healthy colt.”

“That’s great.”

“But there must be a hex on horses today because while I was at the Doyle’s, Maggie Barnes called. Vega misstepped and missed a jump. Thankfully she didn’t break a leg, but she did have a laceration on her shin that needed sutures.”

“She’s such a sweet girl. I’m glad she didn’t seriously hurt herself.”

I opened my purse and looked down as I rummaged around to find my keys.

“Unfortunately, Andrew was riding her and he was thrown and fractured his shoulder.”

It doesn’t surprise me that Dr. Madden already knows Andrew’s diagnosis. The whole town probably does at this point. I found my keys and looked over at him.

“That’s awful, but I guess it could have been worse.”

“It definitely could have, but he’ll still be out of commission for a lot of weeks.” He stood and wiped at the copper-colored hair Thea left on his khaki pants. “The timing is unfortunate.”

“Oh right. Barnes Charters is probably booked for the season. Hopefully John will be able to hire someone to help him.”

“From what I understand, Alice has it taken care of,” he said, referring to John’s wife.

“She’s going to help him?”

“No, she called Adam. He’s coming home.”

My headache came back in full force. I dropped into my desk chair and rubbed my temples.
