Adam looked aggravated and Alice was talking fast and wildly gesturing. She placed her hand on his forearm and said something. His eyes shifted in my direction then shook his head and rubbed the back of his neck when he noticed me looking at him.

I turned in my chair to face the other direction. Today is about finding some wonderful cats and dogs their fur-ever homes, not fixating on Adam Barnes.

Adam

“Oh, there’s Summer,”my mom said. “Let’s go say hi.”

“Let’s just go to lunch.”

She stopped walking and put her hands on her hips.

“I can’t believe you’re not even going over to say hello.”

I shifted my eyes in Summer’s direction and saw her watching us. Shaking my head, I rubbed the back of my neck to ease the headache this conversation is giving me.

“Please stop playing matchmaker.”

“How is expecting you to be polite playing matchmaker?”

“Mom.”

That single word came out as half groan, half sigh.

“I’m sorry, I just don’t understand why you can’t at least spend time with each other as friends. Or whatever. You were so good together. If Jules didn’t get sick, you and Summer would be married. Those feelings don’t just go away.”

My mom is actually meeting her friends here at the festival to go to a concert later. She asked if I wanted to come over with her for lunch beforehand. I should have known she had an ulterior motive.

“Mom, let it go.”

“I just hate it that you’re alone.”

“I’m fine.”

Her look said she didn’t believe me, but she let the subject drop.

She looped her arm through mine and held onto my bicep as we walked.

“What do you want to eat?” she asked.

“I’m going to be boring and say a burger and fries.”

“That sounds perfect.”

We went to the food stand and placed our order, then stepped to the side to wait.

“So how are things going with your father?”

“It’s fine. We’ve settled into a rhythm.”

“That’s good.” She patted my hand. “I knew you’d be okay once you spent time together again.”

Okaymight be a strong word for what my father and I are, but we’re getting by. He even said a few non-work-related words to me yesterday.

Our number was called and I collected our food then we settled at a picnic table.

My mouth watered as I picked up the burger and took a big bite. I closed my eyes and groaned as I chewed.
