I hang up and decide to go baby shopping to take my mind off things. I’m sick of worrying, but I can’t help it. I put a tracker on Carli’s phone while she was asleep because I was terrified of someone taking her without my knowledge and not being able to find her. I have my senses and my shifting skills, but what if they aren’t enough? I have two people to protect now, and every second of everyday I wish that there weren’t any threats to keep me on edge. Devon and Black Valley. Both of them need to be ended for good.

After taking a quick shower, I leave the house and shoot Carli a text. We both decided it’s best to not know the gender of the baby, but it makes baby shopping a little harder. I look at the pink onesies and the tiny blue shoes, and I want to get both. Who cares if it’s a girl wearing boy’s shoes, right?

Hey, baby. Just leaving the house to get a rug for the nursery and some pacifiers. Lunch with me after I’m done?

Firebolt: Sounds good. Ever thought of resigning the Alpha position to be a stay at home, dad?

I chuckle, and type.

Once I put a few more babies in you, and a ring on your finger, I’ll think of it seriously.

Firebolt: God, I can't wait to come home to you. I love working but I like hearing you whisper things like that in my ear more. Text me when you’re outside and I’ll be there.

Don’t take off your apron. I want to see you with it and then naked with nothing but it.

Firebolt: Quit being a horn dog. I can’t serve my customers when I’m turned on.

Grinning, I put my phone away and drive to the store in silence the rest of the way. In about two hours, there’s a permanent crease in the middle of my forehead from all the frowning I’ve been doing while deciding if I liked the yellow rug with little sunflowers on them or the blue one with the puppies. I opted for the yellow one in the end. And got some blue pacifiers to even it out.

I leave the store with a huff, not only annoyed at how tough decisions are when it comes to your kid already, but also because the women in the store looked at me like I was a unicorn before deciding it's perfectly fine to hit on me. I’m more than eager to see Carli. To have her in my arms and kiss her deep until neither of us remember where we are. Then, I want to show her what I got and be excited about it.

What have I become? Whatever it is though, I like it. Never did I feel this way when I thought of Beth being pregnant. In fact, I never thought of becoming a father this quickly. With Carli it feels natural, as if I were born to go baby shopping on a Tuesday morning and then take my woman out on a date. It’s overwhelming, but serene at the same time. I want to bask in this feeling before I leave for Rockport and get knee deep into Silver Moon business.

I park outside the diner and shoot a message to Carli. In a few minutes, I see her wobbling towards my car with a huge grin on her face. She’s wearing her apron, her hair tied into a low ponytail and her skirt swishing around her knees. It’s her baby bump that draws most of my attention, and the way her full, rounded breasts lightly bounce with each step.

“You’re so beautiful, Carli. As soon as you give birth, I’m fucking you hard and getting you pregnant again,” I tell her as soon as she plops her butt on the passenger seat.

With a blush, Carli giggles. “As hot as that sounds, I won’t let that happen. The discomfort and weight and emotions are super duper annoying,” she groans. “I can’t wait to go back to my normal body and hold my child in my arms instead.”

“Are you okay? Does it hurt?” I ask and pull out of the driveway, heading to her favorite burger joint.

“It’s unexplainable.” She smiles. “But I’m fine, nothing for you to worry about. You take care of me really well, you know that?”

“I try my best,” I reply, my chest warming at her words.

“Speaking of, the doctor's appointment is this evening. You’ll come with me, right?”

“Of course I will. I’ll come with you for every appointment now on. Let me know in advance and I’ll be there.”

Carli nods, and looks out the window. “The first few times when I went alone, I thought it would be like that until the end.” She turns to me and puts her hand on my thigh. “I’m glad we found each other again. I’m glad you’re by my side.”

Taking her hand, I press a kiss to her knuckles, not saying anything. Maybe now's a good time to tell her I’ll have to leave. And ask her if she wants to come with me. I open my mouth, but Carli beats me to it, speaking before I can.

“Oh! What rug did you get? I saw your spam of messages very late,” she laughs.

“It wasn’t so funny when I was breaking my head trying to choose, but I’m glad I’m amusing to you.” I wink. “I got the yellow with the sunflowers.”

“That’s perfect,” Carli pats my shoulder, wordlessly saying I did a good job. “Since the nursery is all light and pastel colors, the dark blue one would have clashed. And sunflowers are so sweet.”

“Right?” I laugh along with her.

Hand in hand, we walk inside the small burger place that undoubtedly has the best fries. It’s been Carli’s go to. She’s always craving either the cheeseburger or the strawberry milkshake with honey. We get the booth in the corner and place our orders. I reach forward to take her hand once again and I slowly trace her knuckles with my thumb. I can’t stop touching her soft skin. Carli seems to love that I can’t keep my hands to myself, either.

“Jonah said you called him,” Carli breaks our comfortable silence.

I clear my throat, shifting. “Yeah, he knows some ex-military guys who could keep an eye out for you as well. I trust that guy, but I don't think he likes me that well.”

“You trust him now?” Carli cocks her head, a teasing smirk forming on her pink lips. “What happened to the jealousy?”
