Danika comes into view. I blink in confusion, but my worry overpowers every other sensation. “Danika, my baby…tell me it’s okay.”

She looks stricken, furious and tired all in one. She barks orders, and gets a cloth to press against my wounds, trying to stop my bleeding. Except I’m in so much pain. My body is tearing apart and so is my heart. Every part of me hurts.

“Danika,” I urge again. “My baby.” My voice comes out low, I want to sound louder but my throat is sandpaper. I can barely keep my eyes open.

“Carli, hang on. Don’t close your eyes,” she says softly. “Stay with—”

“Carli!”

“Jace.” I hear him before I see him.

He kneels down and immediately takes me into his arms. Devon is next to him, an unreadable expression on his face.

“Fuck, what happened?” Jace asks, worry etched all over him.

I try to comfort him, but my lips don’t move. My arms are immobile. I’m just so tired.

“Fuck! Beth, if anything happens I’ll fucking kill you.”

Jace says something to Devon. His pretty eyes go hard, spitting as he whispers. Why is he whispering? Why can’t I hear him?

My vision goes spotty. The last thing I see is Jace turning around to me, alarm making his eyes go wide.

And then it’s complete darkness.

Chapter16

Jace

Iclutch Carli to my chest, rocking back and forth because I’m unable to sit still. Every atom in my body is flaring with warning. My cheeks get hot in anger, my claws coming out, teeth bared as I scream at everyone.

“Someone fucking call the ambulance!”

It’s Devon who moves first. He pushes past everyone, looking over his shoulder at Carli again and again. He makes sure to glare at Beth on the way to get his phone. I can’t even look at the person responsible for Carli being limp in my arms. If I do, I’ll most probably kill her.

When Devon and his wolves attacked, my one goal was to remain between them and Carli.

But then they were cornering me. Coming at me as a pack because the fuckers knew I could take them one or two at a time.

And then Carli and Beth were fighting. Moving further away.

As if this was what Beth planned all along.

I couldn't get to Carli in time. I tried, when she called out my name, I tried pushing them all off me…but it was too late.

I rub my forehead, looking at Carli. “Don’t just stand there!” I yell at no one in particular. “Get a car around, call 911, do something.”

“Jace, help is on the way,” Danika tells me. Her lips are turned downwards at the corners. She looks on the edge of tears, but for the sake of me and the pack she’s holding it together.

My hands start to tremble, so I press my lips to Carli’s hairline and whisper, “Please, baby. Don’t leave me.”

Carli’s eyes flutter open. “Baby,” she croaks before she’s out again.

“Don’t speak,” I caress her cheek. “You’ll be fine. I’m with you.”

Her head lolls to the side before she goes still once more.

The room quietens, feet shuffling and whispers are all that can be heard along with my harsh breathing. My knuckles turn white from how hard I’m holding Carli. The tone has definitely shifted to something so much worse than a fight. It’s one thing to be fighting our own, but it's completely another to kill a pregnant shifter so publicly. No…not kill. Carli can’t be dead. I press my palm on her chest, savoring the feel of her slow heart beats. Then I slide my hand down to her stomach, trying to feel my baby’s heartbeat.
