“It’s good to see you,” I grin at her. “What were you two talking about?”

They hesitate, looking at each other. “I’m not going to break if you tell me,” I mutter.

“Devon.” Danika sighs. “We aren’t sure what to do with him just yet.”

“Have you spoken to him?” I ask Jace, and he shakes his head. “You need to speak to him,” I press.

“I can’t leave you alone.”

“I’ll be fine, Jace. In fact, I’ll be so much better if you deal with this sooner rather than later. Before it gets worse.”

“She’s right,” Danika adds. She walks over to grab a glass of water and holds it out to me. “I can stay with her if you like.”

After a moment of thinking, Jace nods. “Sure?” he asks again, brows dropping with worry.

I place my hand over his cheek, and say softly, “Jace, do you know how terrified I was of losing this baby? I begged Beth to let me go at one point, because I knew there was a chance I could have lost it.” Tears spring into my eyes at the memory.

Jace leans in, closes his eyes and presses a kiss against my lips. Soft and tenderly.

“I was so scared,” I continue. “I don’t want to be scared like that ever again. So please, do what you have to. I need this to be over.”

“I promise I’ll try my best.” He gives Danika a look. “Once I’m done, arrange a meeting.”

Jace gives me one last, longing look before he’s out the door.

And I pray a silent prayer to keep him safe.

Chapter18

Jace

Letting out a heavy exhale when I walk out of the hospital, I pull my phone and dial Devon's number. I don’t know what to expect from him. I know he’s shaken up about Carli’s situation, but I also don’t give a shit about his feelings. I want this to be over.

I’m more than willing to do what it takes.

Devon’s anger and need for superiority is something I can’t tolerate. It makes my wolf want to pounce out and end him right there. Not that it’ll come to that.

I’m sure we can work something out. I hope. For Carli’s sake.

I’m bringing the phone to my ear when I spot Devon walking to me across the parking lot. Speaking of the devil. I hang up, and stride to him, meeting him halfway. What the fuck is he doing here?

“How’s Carli?” he asks. “Is she okay? Is the baby okay? I heard she was out for a while, is something wrong? Her wounds are supposed to heal, right?”

I frown. “Why do you even care?” I ask slowly.

Devon’s face shutters. “I care about her. You might not believe me, but I do. And I know I hurt her, but I’ve never hurt her with the intention of killing her…I never meant for that to happen, despite all those threats.”

“Whatever,” I push past him and he follows me as expected. “She’s fine, no thanks to you. And I told you this once, I’ll tell you again. She’s not yours for you to be worried about. Once this is over, don’t come close to her or speak a word to her. You get me?”

“What do you mean, once this is over?” Devon crosses his arms over his chest and raises his chin.

“That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. Tell me what you want, Devon. I don’t know what game you’re playing at, but I want this to fucking en—“

“I challenge you for Alpha, Jace,” Devon states flatly.

I blink at him. “You want to go to battle for my title?”

“Yes,” he nods, his hard gaze telling me that’s exactly what he wants.
