Both Elodie and Jax fell silent.

Jumping to my feet, I started to pace. “Is she at yours, Elodie?” I finally whirled on them.

Elodie remained silent, her judging eyes weighing me down. I took her silence for admission. “Fine, ignore me. I’ll go and talk to her in person as you don't want to tell me where she is. She could be fucking dead for all I know. Leaving like that was stupi–”

“Sit your ass down, Dion,” Jax snarled out. His anger rose up to meet mine. “And don't fucking raise your voice at El ever again.”

“If she would just–”

“No, no, Dion you don't get to put the blame on anyone but yourself this time. You decided to invite Isla, you decided to drink. You. No one else.”

I sank back into the sofa. “I know.”

“Why did you invite Isla, Dion?” Elodie’s voice was quiet.

“I don't know. And I'm too fucking hungover to have you psychoanalyse me right now.”

Elodie leant back. “You do know why, Dion, or would you like me to tell you if you're too fucking stubborn to admit it to yourself?”

I waited for her to continue.

“It's the same reason you picked up a drink last night. Because you don't think you deserve anything good in your life, so you self sabotage.”

“Isla is my friend.”

“Yeah she is, and she is also the woman who cheated on you and had someone else's kid. The woman who Lola replaced. Recently. How do you think Lola felt seeing her here? She's meant to be the one you want to be with and yet–” Her eyes met mine unflinching. “You treated her poorly.”

“I didn't treat her like anything. I had it all planned out. The whole fucking thing was meant to be magical for her so I could–” I froze. Not wanting to say anything more, I snapped my lips closed.

“You had what planned?” Jax leant forward.

“It doesn't matter now, she chose to spend her day with other people so I did as well.”

Elodie let out a long string of curses. “She went and spent it with her mum, you asshole, with family.”

“Yeah, well, Isla is my family as well.” I was purposely being argumentative and I couldn't help it. Stubborn and moody were my middle names. Or maybe it was asshole. I wasn't sure anymore. “Lola has nothing to worry about. She knows how I feel about her. She's just being silly.”

Jumping to her feet, Elodie clenched her hands into fists at her side. “You know what? You really are a tit, Dion Granger, and thick as well. Lola isn't being silly. She's doing what any woman in her position would do. She left the situation before she got hurt and humiliated.”

“Not all women.”

“No, not all women. I sure as hell wouldn't have left without giving you a piece of my mind. I wouldn't have been so fucking in love with you that I didn't want to fight.”

I remained silent.

“Did you hear what I said, Dion? Lola is in love with you.”

Slowly, I reclined back. “Yeah, I know she’s told me.”

A stunned silence filled the room. It was the kind of quiet that seemed impossibly loud.

“Fuck man, congratulations and–” Jax froze, his eyes darting between me and Elodie.

“You didn't say it back, did you?” Elodie's voice was deathly quiet.

“You didn't say it back?” Jax sounded incredulous. “You have been in love with that girl for months and she finally admits to loving you and you don't say it back?”

“We were having an argument. And then, well, the time just didn't feel right.”
