“Why?”
Celia was the newest member of the team but, honestly, I hadn't spent much time getting to know her. She seemed like a nice girl. A little too much attitude sometimes, but I was sure that was just a front to hide how over her head she was with us all.
“Come on, the night is still young. Let me buy you a drink?”
“No.” Her voice was sharp.
Holding my hands up in surrender, I took a step backwards. “Whoa, love, I was just being friendly. No need to rip my head off. I'll leave you to it.”
“I didn't mean… I'm sorry it's just…” Her face crumbled again, twisting in on itself. Something had really gotten to her. “I just can't stay here.”
“Has someone hurt you?” I followed her gaze around the room. “If someone has tried it on and pushed their luck too far, then tell me and I'll…” My eyes landed where hers were trained. Realisation dawned on me as I looked at Erik. He had a leggy blonde practically on his lap.
“Oh, I see.” I whistled. “You got a thing for the boss, huh?”
“No.” Celia's face flamed scarlet. “No, of course not.”
I ignored her. It was clear from the disappointment on her face that she did. Celia was crushing hard on Erik. It was both adorable and pathetic in equal measures. “It happens Celia, relax.” Well, it happened to everyone but me. “Is the new dress for his benefit?” I eyed her thoughtfully. Not exactly perving, but I did appreciate the short dress she was wearing. “You look pretty tonight.” I added when she continued to stammer. “Erik's a fool not to notice you, Celia. Especially tonight, but–”
“I don't think he sees me as a woman at all.” Her shoulders slumped.
Curling my arm around her shoulders, I hugged her to my side. “Well, how about I help you with that? What do you say to having a drink with me, and I'll help you get Erik's attention once and for all?”
Eyes swimming with tears lifted to mine hopefully. “You would do that for me?”
Chuckling to myself, I stepped back, motioning with my hand to the bar. “Of course I'll help you get your dream man, Celia. Now why don't you step into my office?”
