“You may not like me, but you have always been attracted to me,” he declared.

Reaper pressed his mouth to mine.

I swayed, surprised, while he folded himself into me. Lips and teeth collided. He kissed me in a frenzied, impassioned way, like he hadn’t ever kissed someone before. Like he’d never kiss again. I kissed him back like I was haunted, impassioned, devout. Like the stars themselves had collided, bringing us with them, and I was cursed to desire this man until the end of time, when our stars inevitably burned out.

But I couldn’t. Because we were in public, and it was forbidden. My self-preservation won, and I shoved him away.

He stared at me for a moment, enraptured, before vanishing without a goodbye.

ChapterTwenty-Seven

THE ORACLE MUSINGS

Who’s the mystery man from the Fae masquerade? Luna Deokhye and Aubrey Hahm were found dancing with a beautiful stranger during the last round of recruitment: is he a notable alumnus, an estranged lover, or what? Will he drive a wedge between friends from week one? Only they can decide. The future is tumultuous and uncertain.

In other news: The second to last round of cuts is in! This one should be brutal: Houses only want their best for preference round. What are you willing to lose to belong?

Blue flame twinkledin my necklace as I navigated the library stacks.

“You don’t have to follow me in here, Gaksi. It’s just the library.” A flexible, shimmery ward had appeared around library doors last night, offering protection from wandering demons. The University expressed gratitude for the anonymous House gift via an ad space in The Eternal. Gaksi had cackled like a witch when he read it this morning.

“It’s cozy in here,” Gaksi answered. “Besides, I enjoy learning what you do. Consider me your personal Cheshire cat.”

I rolled my eyes.

Vivienne waved her fingers at me, nodding at the seat across her. Her red sweater dress matched the liquid in her see-through bottle.

“Good morning, Vivienne!” Gaksi said.

Her pleasant demeanor disappeared.

“Gaksi,” she answered with a tight-lipped smile. “So nice to see you’ve joined our study date.”

Vivienne’s shoulders tensed as I sat. “Have you ever lived without… company?” She sipped from her bottle, sloshing the dark liquid. It stained her lips maroon, the same color as freshly-bitten flesh.

“No, Gaksi is family. We’ve always had him.”

She frowned. “Should we get to studying, then?”

The abrupt subject change unsettled me. “Sure.”

We flipped through Vamp House history, University History, and chiropterology (bat science). Almost all Vampires took a bat class, so she was quick with my zoology homework, pointing out the structural features of fangs and wings.

Her lips pursed when Gaksi turned the pages for us. “Does Gaksi ever help you with exams?”

He snickered in my head.

“No, he rarely knows the answer.”

“Hey!”

“And if he did, it was because I learned it first.”

“I see,” Vivienne said. She flipped through a flashcard set before asking another question. “You know you would have to get rid of him to join Vamp House, right?”

My brows creased in confusion.

“Vampires don’t share. We can’t have an unidentified demon living in sacred vampire space.”
